    Pediatric endoscopy

    The endoscopy is the examination of the digestive system, during which the doctor can see and assess the condition of the stomach and intestine. Such examinations are effective and safe; that is why they are applied for diagnosing the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in children.

    The gastroscopy is performed for diagnosing the diseases of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, the colonoscopy – for studying the condition of the large intestine.

    PEDIATRIC GASTROSCOPY IN OXFORD MEDICAL

    The performance of gastroscopy is usually recommended by the pediatric gastroenterologist, to whom the child goes with the following symptoms:

    • stomachache;
    • bad appetite;
    • frequent nausea and vomiting;
    • permanent feeling of heaviness in the stomach.

    The examination is performed on the empty stomach (not less than 8-10 hours from the last meal) and takes just several minutes. By using the gastroscopy, the doctors check the children for presence of:

    • gastritis;
    • duodenitis;
    • gastric ulcer;
    • duodenal ulcer;
    • congenital pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • tumors;
    • bleedings.

    PEDIATRIC COLONOSCOPY IN OXFORD MEDICAL CLINIC

    A colonoscopy is the examination of the large intestine by using the flexible guided probe. Like for the gastroscopy, the pediatric gastroenterologist most often orders the examination, which is usually performed in case of appearance of such symptoms in the child:

    • weight loss;
    • anemia;
    • stomachache;
    • pain in the stomach;
    • frequent diarrhea;
    • appearance of blood, mucus or pus in feces;
    • permanent or continuous constipations.

    By using the colonoscopy, the doctors exclude the presence:

    • bleedings;
    • intestinal obstruction;
    • colitis;
    • polyps etc.

    The examination will last for 20-30 minutes and be performed by the experienced pediatric endoscopist.

    If the parents wish and there are no medical contraindications, the gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be performed under sedation that allows avoiding unpleasant feelings and discomfort for the child.

    The endoscopic examinations may include the performance of biopsy – extraction of sample tissues for further study in the laboratory.
