Symptoms Requiring a Hematologist Consultation

It is necessary to consult a doctor if you are concerned about:

Frequent nosebleeds or other bleeding

Presence of bruises without trauma.

Poor blood coagulation after injuries.

Enlargement of lymph nodes.

List of diseases

Diagnostic Methods Used in the Hematology Department

Taking into account complaints and medical history, a hematologist may prescribe the following tests:

Complete blood count (CBC).

A basic laboratory test that allows assessment of red blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets, white blood cells, as well as their morphological features. It is the basis for the primary detection of anemia, infections, and inflammation.

Biochemical blood test.

Helps determine the functional state of organs and systems, particularly the liver, kidneys, and iron metabolism. Shows the level of ferritin, transferrin, serum iron, and proteins.

Immunogram.

A comprehensive study that allows assessment of the immune system, important in cases of frequent infections, suspected immunodeficiencies, or autoimmune blood diseases.

Coagulogram.

Evaluates blood clotting indicators, including prothrombin time, INR, fibrinogen, and others. Used when hemorrhagic diatheses or thrombosis are suspected.

Vitamin B12 and folic acid levels.

These indicators are important in macrocytic anemias and neurological complaints since deficiency of these vitamins affects hematopoiesis.

Myelogram (bone marrow puncture).

Performed when indicated to assess bone marrow function. Allows accurate determination of changes in anemia, leukemia, and other hematopoietic pathologies.

Blood tumor markers.

Detect specific proteins that may indicate the presence of a malignant process in the blood system, particularly when lymphoma or multiple myeloma is suspected.

How to prepare for a hematologist consultation

Do I need to bring previous test results?

Yes, it is advisable to prepare all available tests and examinations: complete blood count, coagulation profile, biochemistry, ultrasound, or other studies. Also, bring discharge summaries from previous consultations. This will help the doctor assess your condition faster and avoid repeated procedures.

What information about symptoms should I prepare?

Formulate your main complaints: when the symptoms appeared, how often they recur, and whether they are related to diet, stress, or lifestyle. A clear description will allow the doctor to better understand the course of the condition.

Should I inform the doctor about the medications I take?

Yes, be sure to mention all medications you are taking, from vitamins and supplements to anticoagulants or hormonal drugs. Do not stop taking them on your own before the visit, as this information is essential for the correct interpretation of tests and further recommendations.

Initial Examination and Hematologist Consultation are Conducted as Follows

The first visit to a hematologist is not only a conversation but also a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s health. The doctor not only inquires about complaints but also performs a clinical examination, provides recommendations regarding diagnosis or treatment. This approach allows forming an accurate picture.

Assessment of complaints and medical history

The hematologist clarifies all symptoms: when they appeared, how they developed, whether there is a dependence on external factors. The doctor then asks about chronic diseases, surgeries, family history, including hereditary blood diseases and oncopathology.

Examination

During a physical examination, the hematologist pays attention to the color of the skin, mucous membranes, presence of hematomas, enlargement of lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. This makes it possible to suspect anemia, leukemia, or other pathologies.

Appointment of tests.

Based on the results of the initial examination, the doctor prescribes tests and instrumental studies. This may include a complete blood count, coagulogram, immunogram, ultrasound of internal organs, or bone marrow puncture.

Recommendations

After assessing the patient’s condition and test results, the doctor provides individual recommendations. These may include lifestyle advice, prescription of drug therapy, referral to related specialists, or dynamic follow-up.
