Intimate discomfort — is a very personal topic that is not always easy to discuss even with a doctor. If the shape or size of the labia bothers you, affects your sense of comfort or self-confidence, it can be delicately corrected with the help of labiaplasty.

At «Oxford Medical», correction of the labia is performed by experienced specialists in a modern surgical inpatient facility. The method and extent of the intervention are selected depending on the anatomical features and the result the patient wants to achieve.

Make an appointment for a consultation at «Oxford Medical» to discuss what concerns you and learn about possible correction options. The doctor will conduct an examination, answer questions, and explain how the operation and recovery after it will proceed.

What Is Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty — is a plastic surgery procedure during which the shape, size, or symmetry of the labia is changed. Most often, it involves reducing the labia if their anatomical features cause physical or aesthetic discomfort.

Types of Labiaplasty

The type of surgery depends on which specific area needs to be corrected and what result the patient wants to achieve. Most often, labiaplasty is performed to change the shape or size of the labia minora, but correction of the labia majora is also possible.

Correction of the Labia Minora

To reduce the labia minora or eliminate pronounced asymmetry, the surgeon may use different techniques:

  • edge resection (trim technique) — part of the tissue is removed along the free edge and a new contour is formed;
  • wedge resection (wedge technique) — a wedge-shaped section is removed while preserving the natural edge;
  • combined technique — combines several correction methods if required by the anatomical features.

The method is selected depending on the shape, size, and presence of asymmetry.

Correction of the Labia Majora

During labiaplasty, not only the labia minora but also the labia majora can be changed. If they are enlarged or have lost a clear contour, the surgeon can correct their shape and size.

If the main problem, on the contrary, is loss of volume, other methods are used. In such cases, lipofilling or injectable contour correction of the labia may be recommended, which help restore volume and make the contours more pronounced. These are no longer classic surgical labiaplasty, but separate methods of intimate correction.

Indications for Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is most often performed for aesthetic reasons when a woman is not satisfied with
the shape or size of the labia. At the same time, pronounced enlargement or asymmetry may
also cause physical discomfort — chafing, pain while walking, exercising, sitting for long
periods, or wearing tight clothing. In some cases, this also affects self-confidence and
comfort during intimacy.

The main indications for labiaplasty:

enlarged labia minora;

pronounced asymmetry;

sagging of the labia minora beyond the labia majora;

chafing, irritation, or discomfort during movement;

pain or discomfort during intimacy;

changes in shape after childbirth or injuries;

loss of firmness and changes in the contours of the labia majora;

aesthetic dissatisfaction with the shape or proportions of the intimate area.

List of diseases

Such changes may be associated with natural anatomical features, pregnancy and childbirth, age-related changes, injuries, or significant fluctuations in body weight. In such cases, surgery on the labia makes it possible to correct the shape, size, or asymmetry and eliminate the cause of discomfort.

Contraindications to Labiaplasty

Most contraindications to labiaplasty are temporary.

The surgery is not performed in cases of:

  • acute infectious diseases;
  • inflammatory processes and infections in the intimate area;
  • blood clotting disorders;
  • uncontrolled diabetes mellitus;
  • severe heart diseases and other diseases of internal organs in the stage of decompensation;
  • active oncological diseases;
  • pregnancy;
  • the early postpartum period.

If the contraindication is temporary, the surgery can be scheduled after recovery or completion of the recovery period.

Preparation for Labiaplasty

Preparation begins with a consultation, during which the gynecologist clarifies what exactly concerns the patient, conducts an examination, and determines the extent of the correction. Before surgery, it is also important to make sure that there are no inflammatory processes or other conditions that may interfere with normal healing.

Usually, before labiaplasty, it is necessary to undergo:

  • a general blood and urine test;
  • a biochemical blood test;
  • a coagulation test;
  • testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C;
  • an electrocardiogram;
  • additional examinations if indicated.

The surgery is usually scheduled outside the menstrual period so that the first days of healing are more comfortable. If labiaplasty is performed under general anesthesia, a fasting period must be observed before the intervention: do not eat for 8 hours and do not drink for 2 hours before the surgery.

How Labiaplasty Is Performed

Labiaplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia — the type of anesthesia depends on the extent of the correction. On average, the surgery lasts about 30–60 minutes.

The main stages of the surgery:

  • Marking. Before the intervention begins, the doctor marks the areas that need to be corrected according to the planned shape.
  • Anesthesia. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia is administered so that the surgery is painless.
  • Correction. The surgeon removes the necessary portion of tissue and forms a new contour.
  • Suturing. After the correction is completed, the edges of the tissues are carefully joined. Usually, absorbable sutures are used, which do not need to be removed.

After the surgery, the patient remains under the supervision of medical staff for some time. If she feels well, she can usually return home the same day.

If necessary, labiaplasty can be combined with other surgeries in the intimate area, for example, with vaginoplasty — surgical correction of the walls and diameter of the vagina. The appropriateness of such a combination is determined in advance in order to properly plan the extent of the intervention.

Labiaplasty: Postoperative Care and Rehabilitation Period

During the first 2–3 days after labiaplasty, swelling, moderate soreness, and slight bloody discharge may occur. Then these manifestations gradually decrease, although slight swelling may persist for another 1–2 weeks.

During the recovery period, it is recommended to:

  • maintain gentle hygiene of the intimate area;
  • wear loose underwear that does not chafe;
  • avoid prolonged sitting during the first few days;
  • temporarily refrain from intense workouts, cycling, and other physical activities;
  • not take hot baths or visit a sauna, bathhouse, or swimming pool;
  • abstain from sexual intercourse for approximately 4–6 weeks;
  • attend follow-up examinations within the timeframes determined by the doctor.

Doctors at «Oxford Medical» advise carefully monitoring your well-being during the recovery period and not missing follow-up examinations.

Possible Complications After Labiaplasty

Complications after labiaplasty are rare, especially if the surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon and the patient follows the recommendations during the recovery period. At the same time, as after any surgical intervention, certain risks remain.

Possible complications include:

  • bleeding or hematoma formation;
  • infection of the postoperative area;
  • pronounced or prolonged swelling;
  • separation of the sutures;
  • formation of a noticeable scar;
  • temporary decrease or change in sensitivity;
  • asymmetry or an unsatisfactory aesthetic result.

Doctors at «Oxford Medical», answering the question of why labiaplasty can be dangerous, explain: the main risks are associated with bleeding, infection, separation of the sutures, or impaired healing. If pain or swelling suddenly increases, heavy bleeding appears, the temperature rises, or the discharge has an unpleasant odor, it is necessary to consult a doctor before the scheduled examination.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sensitivity Decrease After Labiaplasty?

During the first weeks after labiaplasty, due to swelling, sensitivity may be somewhat reduced or, conversely, increased. As the tissues heal, these sensations usually disappear, and sensitivity returns to its usual level. A persistent decrease in sensitivity after surgery is rare.

When Can You Have Sex After Labiaplasty?

It is usually recommended to resume sexual activity approximately 4–6 weeks later, when the tissues have healed well. Sexual contact too early may cause pain, bleeding, or separation of the sutures, so it is better to wait for the follow-up examination.

When Is It Better to Have Labiaplasty — Before or After Childbirth?

Labiaplasty can also be performed before pregnancy. But if childbirth is planned in the near future, it is often more appropriate to postpone the surgery, since the tissues of the intimate area may change during pregnancy and childbirth.

How Many Days Should You Avoid Sitting After Labiaplasty?

During the first 2–3 days after surgery, it is advisable to sit as little as possible. Then the amount of time spent sitting can be gradually increased if this does not cause pain or increased swelling. The exact recommendations depend on the extent of the surgery and the course of recovery.
