show full textProstatectomy is a surgery on the prostate (prostate gland), during which the gland is removed partially or completely with adjacent seminal vesicles and lymph nodes (radical prostatectomy).
The main indications for the surgery are prostate tumors, which can be both benign and malignant. The first type includes benign prostatic hyperplasia - prostate adenoma; the second – prostate cancer.
The operation is prescribed in cases when the disease can’t be cured by means of drug therapy and for the recovery of the patient it is necessary to remove the affected organ (partially or completely).
Symptoms, both in benign adenoma and cancer, are often similar:
frequent urge to urinate;
feeling of fullness of the bladder even after urination;
difficult urination, up to urinary retention;
intermittent and thin stream of urine;
perineum pain, etc.
Prior to the widespread usage of laparoscopy, prostate removal was performed by means of an open surgery which supposes making an incision in the lower abdomen. The laparoscopic method gives access to the organ through several punctures, into which ports and working tools are inserted.
Laparoscopic prostatectomy has a number of advantages:
less blood loss during the operation;
less significant levels of pain after surgery;
short postoperative period and hospitalization.
The operation is performed by qualified surgeons in modern operating units. Before the procedure the patient undergoes a standard set of tests (blood tests, electrocardiogram).
The operation itself lasts from two to four hours, the postoperative period the patients spend in comfortable wards of the hospital. Hospitalization, depending on the patient's condition, can last from 2 to 7 days. Further recovery of the patient is possible at home.
The usage of laparoscopic method allows keeping to a minimum the risk of common complications caused by radical prostatectomy: erectile and orgasmic dysfunction, urinary incontinence.
The price of radical prostatectomy depends on the complexity of the surgery. In the Oxford Medical Clinic laparoscopic prostatectomy of I and II categories of complexity is carried out. It is also possible to perform a prostatectomy through an incision in the lower abdomen. This type of surgery is more budget-friendly.
