MR angiography is a modern method of instrumental diagnostics that allows a detailed assessment of the condition of blood vessels, their lumen, patency, and the characteristics of blood flow. The examination is used to detect narrowing, aneurysms, vascular malformations, and other changes that may affect the blood supply to the brain.

The method is not associated with X-ray radiation; however, in some cases the examination may be contraindicated or temporarily limited.

Absolute contraindications include:

• the presence of a pacemaker or an implanted defibrillator that is incompatible with MRI;

• ferromagnetic vascular clips;

• cochlear implants;

• metal foreign bodies, especially in the eye area;

• implanted devices whose compatibility with the magnetic field has not been confirmed.

Relative limitations may include:

• pronounced claustrophobia;

• inability to remain motionless during scanning;

• the first trimester of pregnancy (the examination is performed only for justified indications).

If MR angiography without contrast is planned, there are usually no additional limitations. If it is necessary to administer a contrast agent, kidney function is assessed beforehand and possible individual allergic reactions are taken into account.

Usually, no special complicated preparation for the examination is required. In most cases, magnetic resonance imaging of the vessels of the brain and neck is performed without changes in diet and the intake of usual medications.

Before the procedure, it is important to inform the doctor about the presence of implants, metal structures, previous surgeries, and chronic diseases. Immediately before the scan, it is necessary to remove all metal objects — jewelry, watches, glasses, hearing aids.

If an examination with contrast enhancement is planned, a blood test may be recommended in advance to assess kidney function.

Before the procedure begins, the patient lies down on the movable table of the scanner. The head is fixed with a special coil, which helps to obtain clear images. It is important to remain motionless throughout the entire scan — the quality of the results depends on this.

After preparation, the table smoothly moves inside the machine, and the scanning begins. During the operation of the scanner, characteristic rhythmic sounds are heard — this is a normal technical feature of the equipment. 

The procedure is painless and does not cause unpleasant sensations. The examination usually lasts from 15 to 30 minutes — depending on the area and volume of scanning. If contrast enhancement is предусмотрено, a series of images is first taken without the agent, after which a contrast substance is injected intravenously and the examination is continued.

After the examination, the patient receives a report, on the basis of which further recommendations are provided by a vascular surgeon or a neurologist. Usually, it is these specialists who provide a recommendation regarding MRI of arteries and veins.

The cost of the examination depends on which vessels need to be examined — the arteries of the brain, veins, or the main arteries of the neck, as well as on the need for contrast enhancement. If a standard MRI under an angiography protocol is performed without the administration of a contrast agent, the price is lower. In cases where it is necessary to assess the vascular system in more detail, the examination is performed with contrast — then the cost may differ due to an additional stage of scanning.
