Fluoridation of teeth in children
The fluoride treatment (or remineralization) is the application of special solutions, rich with fluorine ions, on the dental surface. The fluoride treatment is the important measure of prevention, allowing preventing the development of tooth decay in children. The procedure is easy and absolutely painless; that is why it does not only protect the child’s teeth, but also shows that the visit to a dentist is not frightful and painful.
Why Does Your Child Need Fluoride Treatment?
The fluorine ions prevent impact of the acidic medium in the child’s mouth, thus not letting the bacteria, causing tooth decay, to proliferate.
It is important to realize that the fluoride treatment, coupled with professional teeth cleaning, is the tooth decay preventive measure, but not its treatment. That is, the regular fluoride treatment will allow preventing the appearance of tooth decay, but in case of its appearance, first you should start treating the tooth decay and then perform fluoride treatment.
The fluoride treatment procedure is usually recommended from 1.5 – 2 years on the regular basis (from two to five times a year – the pediatric dentist will exactly specify after examination).
It allows protecting from:
- tooth decay
- tooth hypersensitivity
- increased abrasiveness of the enamel
- enamel lesions
It is very important to fluoridate teeth during their eruption or replacement. The recently erupted tooth, baby or molar, is covered with enamel, in which there is not enough fluorine or other active materials. Namely, at this time the tooth is especially susceptible to tooth decay.
The fluoride treatment is also necessary during adolescence, when, as the result of active growth of the organism and hormonal changes, the viscosity of the saliva increases that adversely affects the dental enamel. In addition, the fluoride treatment needs to be performed during the placement of braces systems.
The deficiency of fluorine and minerals is covered by using the remineralization, commonly known as the fluoride treatment.
Dental Fluoride Treatment Procedure
The dental fluoride treatment is preceded by the preparation procedure, which consists in tooth decay treatment and mechanical teeth cleaning, allowing getting rid of the dental plaque. After that, the child’s teeth are covered by using the special brush and dried by the warm air or under exposure to the light of special lamp. For achieving the maximum effect, you need to undergo 3-4 procedures of fluoride treatment.
With regular fluoride treatment and teeth cleaning, you will manage to secure your child’s teeth against many diseases, and the preventive examination will be the only reason to visit the dentist for your child.
