Book a medical examination before school or kindergarten at a time convenient for you.

What Is Included in the Medical Examination Before School and Kindergarten

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the list of doctors’ consultations and examinations depends on whether the child is entering kindergarten, first grade, or undergoing an annual preventive examination. The mandatory stages are defined by regulatory documents, while additional consultations and examinations are prescribed by the pediatrician according to indications, taking into account the child’s complaints and health condition.

If necessary, the pediatrician may recommend consultations with the following specialists:

  • an ophthalmologist — a pediatric ophthalmologist consultation is needed if vision has deteriorated, the child often squints or complains of eye fatigue;
  • an otolaryngologist — in case of hearing loss, difficulty with nasal breathing or frequent diseases of the ENT organs;
  • a neurologist — in case of headache, dizziness, disorders of coordination, sleep or behavior;
  • an orthopedic traumatologist — in case of posture or gait disorders, pain in the back, joints or suspected flat feet;
  • a cardiologist — in case of shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, chest pain;
  • an endocrinologist — if the child’s height, weight or rate of development noticeably differs from age-related indicators.

These consultations do not need to be completed independently in advance: they are prescribed by the pediatrician only when there are medical grounds for them.

Medical Examination Before Kindergarten

The mandatory medical examination for kindergarten includes an examination by a primary care physician and a dentist. A pediatrician or family doctor assesses the child’s general condition and physical development, measures height and weight, conducts a basic examination of vision, hearing, posture and the condition of the feet, and also assesses compliance with the main age-related development indicators.

Before admission to a preschool institution, it is also necessary to take:

  • a complete blood count;
  • a general urine test;
  • a stool test for worm eggs.

Consultations with an ophthalmologist, neurologist, otolaryngologist, orthopedist and other specialized doctors are not mandatory for every child in order to obtain a certificate for kindergarten. If there are complaints or possible disorders are detected during the examination, the pediatrician refers the child to the appropriate specialist.

Medical Examination Before First Grade

The medical examination before school for a future first-grader must include a consultation with a pediatrician and an examination by a dentist. The pediatrician assesses the child’s health and physical development, measures height and weight, performs a basic check of visual acuity, hearing, posture and the condition of the feet, paying particular attention to possible signs of flat feet.

Mandatory laboratory tests include:

  • a complete blood count;
  • a blood test to determine the glucose level;
  • a general urine test;
  • a stool test for worm eggs.

Other examinations before school and consultations with specialized doctors are conducted according to indications. For example, the pediatrician may recommend additionally checking the child’s vision, hearing, cardiovascular or nervous system if the child has corresponding complaints or possible disorders are detected during the examination.

Medical Examination During Further School Education

According to the current procedure of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, preventive examinations of children aged 4 to 18 are conducted annually. The list of scheduled medical consultations and examinations depends on the schoolchild’s age and state of health.

At the ages of 6–9, 11–13 and 15–17, the main medical examination for school is conducted by a pediatrician. The pediatrician assesses the general condition and physical development, measures height and weight, checks visual acuity, posture and other indicators provided for the corresponding age. Additional tests and consultations with specialists are prescribed according to indications.

At the ages of 10 and 14, the preventive examination of schoolchildren is extended. In addition to an examination by a pediatrician, the child needs to undergo an examination by a dentist, take a complete blood count and a general urine test, as well as a blood test to determine the glucose level.

The doctors at “Oxford Medical” recommend beginning the child’s medical examination with a pediatrician’s consultation. The pediatrician will take into account the child’s age and state of health, determine the mandatory stages and, if necessary, prescribe additional consultations or examinations.

How to Obtain Certificate No. 086/o

To obtain certificate 086/o, it is necessary to make an appointment for the child with a pediatrician. The doctor will conduct an examination, check the medical data and explain whether tests, a pediatric dentist consultation or other examinations are needed according to the child’s age.

The medical examination of schoolchildren and the issuance of the certificate take place in several simple steps:

  1. Consultation and examination by a pediatrician.
  2. Undergoing the necessary tests or consultations if they are required for the child’s age or recommended according to indications.
  3. Issuance of the medical certificate after all results have been received.

According to information from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, medical certificate 086/o is issued based on the results of a preventive examination. In it, the doctor indicates a conclusion about the child’s state of health and recommendations regarding physical education classes.

If additional consultations are not needed, the issuance of the certificate takes a minimum amount of time. When you contact the clinic, the administrator will help coordinate the appointments so that the medical examination for school or kindergarten is convenient for the parents and the child.

The doctors at “Oxford Medical” recommend bringing the medical record, vaccination data and the results of recent examinations, if available, to the preventive examination before school. This will help the pediatrician issue the school certificate more quickly.

How to Prepare a Child for a Medical Examination

No special preparation for the pediatrician’s examination is required. The day before, it is advisable to ensure that the child gets adequate sleep and rest, and to calmly explain that the doctor will measure height and weight, listen to breathing, and check vision and hearing.

It is better to choose comfortable clothing that can be easily removed during the examination. Before the appointment, the child may eat and drink as usual, provided that no laboratory tests are scheduled for that day.

If a blood test is required, the child must come on an empty stomach. Clean still water may be consumed. Urine and stool are collected at home in the morning in special sterile containers.

The doctors at “Oxford Medical” advise talking about the examination in a friendly manner, without frightening the child with injections or unpleasant procedures. Calm psychological preparation helps reduce anxiety and makes it easier to establish contact with the doctor.
