If you want to delicately adjust volumes, make the contours smoother, or restore the lost fullness of individual areas, one of the options may be lipofilling. The method allows the patient’s own adipose tissue to be used for modeling the appearance and to obtain a natural result without the use of synthetic implants.

At «Oxford Medical», correction is planned individually, taking into account anatomical features and desired changes. The procedure is performed by experienced plastic surgeons in a modern inpatient facility.

If you want to undergo lipomodeling, make an appointment for a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The doctor will conduct an examination and determine the necessary scope of correction, taking your wishes into account.

What is lipofilling

Lipofilling is a correction method during which the patient’s own adipose tissue is taken from one area of the body, specially processed, and injected into another. Such lipotransfer allows volume to be added, contours to be evened out, or restored where necessary, using the patient’s own biological material.

Indications for lipofilling

The main indications for body liposculpting may include:

volume deficiency in individual areas;

asymmetry after injuries, surgeries, or due to anatomical features;

age-related reduction in soft tissue volume;

the desire to correct the shape of a specific area without placing implants.

List of diseases

Lipofilling is also used to correct age-related facial changes. It is performed to eliminate nasolabial folds, restore the volume of the cheekbones and cheeks, correct hollows in the temporal area, and other changes.

Lipofilling may be included in a comprehensive plastic correction plan together with other interventions, for example abdominoplasty, breast lift, labiaplasty, or other surgeries. The surgeon determines the specific combination of procedures taking into account the result that the patient wants to achieve.

Contraindications to lipofilling

Before the procedure, the doctor assesses the general state of health, the donor area, and the area that is planned to be corrected. If there are factors that may impair healing or the engraftment of adipose tissue, lipofilling is postponed.

The main contraindications include:

  • active inflammatory processes or infections in the area of fat harvesting or injection;
  • uncontrolled diabetes mellitus;
  • pronounced circulatory disorders;
  • blood clotting disorders;
  • an insufficient amount of adipose tissue for the planned correction;
  • pregnancy and the breastfeeding period.

Also, before the procedure, it is important to inform the doctor about chronic diseases, medication use, and smoking, since this may affect healing and the result.

Which areas can be corrected with lipofilling

Lipofilling is most often performed in the following areas:

  • Face — cheekbones, cheeks, temples, chin, lips, and the area around the eyes. With the help of adipose tissue, it is also possible to remove dark circles under the eyes if they are associated with a volume deficiency.
  • Breasts — for a moderate increase in volume, correction of slight asymmetry, and restoration of contours.
  • Buttocks and thighs — for changing the shape, filling local depressions, and creating smoother transitions.
  • Hands and other areas — for restoring soft tissue volume after age-related changes, injuries, or surgeries.

Doctors at “Oxford Medical” explain: lipofilling can be performed both for one area and for several zones simultaneously if comprehensive correction of the face or body is needed.

Lipofilling is a correction that can be performed in stages if necessary. If, after the result has stabilized, it is necessary to add a little more volume or correct asymmetry, the doctor may recommend a repeat procedure.

Preparation for lipofilling

Preparation begins with a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The doctor determines the areas for harvesting and injecting adipose tissue, discusses the desired result, and plans the scope of the future correction. After this, the patient is prescribed a preoperative examination.

Usually, it includes:

  • a complete blood count and urinalysis;
  • a biochemical blood test;
  • a coagulogram;
  • tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis;
  • an electrocardiogram;
  • additional examinations according to indications.

If the patient takes medications that affect blood clotting, the doctor adjusts the regimen of their use before surgery if necessary.

The type of anesthesia is determined in advance. If lipofilling will be performed under general anesthesia, food must not be consumed for 8 hours before the operation. Clean still water can be drunk no later than 2 hours before the intervention.

How lipofilling is performed

Lipofilling consists of two main stages: first, the surgeon obtains adipose tissue from the donor area, and then, after special processing, injects it into the correction area.

The main stages of the procedure:

  • Harvesting adipose tissue. Through small punctures, the surgeon performs liposuction of the donor area and obtains material for subsequent transplantation.
  • Processing adipose tissue. The obtained material is cleaned of blood, fluid, and other impurities and prepared for injection.
  • Injection into the correction area. Next, fat transplantation is performed: adipose tissue is injected in small portions at different depths and evenly distributed in the correction area.
  • Completion of the procedure. The puncture sites are closed and a sterile dressing is applied to them.

Minor interventions may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation, while general anesthesia is used for more extensive correction.

Rehabilitation after lipofilling

In the first days after lipomodeling, there may be swelling, bruising, and moderate pain both in the correction area and at the site where adipose tissue was harvested. Gradually, these manifestations decrease.

During the recovery period, it is recommended to:

  • wear compression garments on the donor area for 3–4 weeks;
  • avoid intense physical activity during the first 1–2 weeks;
  • not massage or press on the area where adipose tissue was injected;
  • after buttock lipofilling, avoid prolonged sitting without a special cushion, and after breast correction — pressure on this area;
  • return to training gradually, usually after 3–4 weeks.

Doctors at “Oxford Medical” recommend avoiding pressure on the correction area during the first weeks after lipofilling and not rushing into intense training. This is important for normal tissue recovery and preservation of the volume obtained during the procedure.

Possible complications after lipofilling

After lipofilling, swelling, bruising, and moderate discomfort during the first days are a normal part of recovery. Less commonly, complications associated with healing or partial resorption of the transplanted adipose tissue may occur.

Possible complications include:

  • unevenness or asymmetry in the correction area;
  • indurations and fat cysts, which may form with partial resorption of the tissue;
  • seroma — accumulation of fluid in the area where fat was harvested;
  • inflammation or infection in the puncture area.

In a 2025 systematic review that included more than 6200 patients after autologous fat transplantation, the overall complication rate was about 4.2%, and infections and fat necrosis were described most often. This indicates that serious complications after lipofilling occur quite rarely.

Doctors at “Oxford Medical” advise not to wait for a scheduled examination if pain or swelling noticeably increases after the procedure, pronounced redness appears, or the temperature rises. In such a case, it is better to contact the surgeon immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What is better: lipofilling or fillers, or hyaluronic acid?

It depends on the area and the desired result. Fillers with hyaluronic acid are suitable for small and precise correction, while lipofilling is suitable when a larger volume needs to be restored using the patient’s own adipose tissue. The optimal method is selected by a plastic surgeon after an examination.

How long does the result after lipofilling last?

After part of the transplanted adipose tissue is naturally resorbed, the volume stabilizes. The adipose tissue that remains can stay in the correction area for years. The result is affected by weight fluctuations, age, and individual characteristics of the body.

What is the difference between liposuction and lipofilling?

These procedures have different purposes. In particular, liposuction is needed to remove localized fat deposits and reduce the volume of a certain area. Lipofilling, on the contrary, involves using the patient’s own adipose tissue to add volume or correct the shape. These procedures are often combined within a single intervention.

Can thin people undergo lipofilling?

Yes, if there is a sufficient amount of adipose tissue for harvesting. Even in thin patients, it can sometimes be taken from the abdomen, thighs, or other areas. In other cases, the plastic surgeon may suggest alternative correction methods.
