X-ray of pelvic bones

X-ray of the pelvis

Digital X-ray of the pelvic bones is a radiographic method for diagnosing pelvic pathologies which provides the possibility of assessing the condition of constituent bones included into this area, as well as the iliosacral and pubic joints. The study helps to diagnose damages to the pelvic ring, internal organs and adjacent soft tissues. Most often examination of this area is required by surgeons, traumatologists or orthopedists.

Indications for X-ray of the pelvic bones

X-ray of pelvic bones is usually prescribed to the patients with:

  • damage to the pubic or iliosacral joints;
  • a fracture of the proximal part, femoral neck or head;
  • coxarthrosis;
  • dislocations and incomplete dislocations of the hip joint;
  • suspected tumors or metastases;
  • arthritis;
  • osteoporosis;
  • osteochondropathy of the femoral head.

What does an X-ray of the pelvic bones show?

X-ray of the pelvic bones allows you to detect changes characteristic of various diseases. Taking into account the patient's symptoms, medical history and research results, the doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and choose the appropriate treatment.

Changes detected by X-ray may indicate the following pathologies:

  • the presence of bone fragments confirms a fracture;
  • displacement of the hip joint elements occurs during dislocation;
  • a change in the structure of the femoral head and acetabulum may be a symptom of dysplasia;
  • a decrease in the joint space and the presence of osteophytes may indicate the development of osteoarthritis;
  • pronounced regeneration of bone structures may be a symptom of necrosis;
  • strongly darkened areas may reflect neoplasms.

To clarify and confirm the diagnosis, the patient may need additional examinations, for example, an X-ray of the leg or an X-ray of the spine.

Preparation for X-ray of the pelvic bones

For obtaining accurate results the patient must undergo simple prep procedure before performing an X-ray of the pelvic bones. It is aimed at avoiding the appearance of blurred areas in the image.

If the examination is planned beforehand then several days before x-ray a patient is supposed to exclude from the diet the products that stimulate the intestine increased gas formation (brown bread, beans, fizzy drinks, cabbage, etc.). The research is conducted only on an empty stomach (stop eating 12 hours before x-ray). If we are talking about an urgent examination, cleaning of the intestine is carried out with the help of an enema.

How X-ray of pelvic bones is performed

Most often a direct projection of the studied area on the image is enough for the doctor to diagnose a disease. The patient is placed face up on the table of the X-ray machine, a roller is placed under his knees, the elbows are on the sides of the trunk, and the hands are folded on the chest. But a patient’s position may vary, depending on the condition and nature of the problem that is bothering him/her.

Then the doctor turns on the device, which takes a picture – the whole process takes no more than a few minutes. During X-rays it is very important not to move, because the slightest movement can lead to blurring of the image. The process of x-ray examination does not cause unpleasant sensations or pain – everything goes quickly and painlessly.

Q&A

What are the advantages of radiography over other methods of diagnosing pelvic bones?

X-rays expose less radiation than CT and MRI and are more affordable. They provide good visualization of bone tissue, but do not provide enough information about the condition of soft tissues.

Are there any features of pelvic X-rays in children?

Children should only have pelvic X-rays performed as directed by a doctor.

Can I eat before a pelvic X-ray?

The study is performed on an empty stomach, at least 12 hours after the last meal. For 2 days, foods that cause increased gas formation should be excluded from the diet.
