X-ray of the sinuses

X-ray of the sinuses in Kiev

X-ray of the sinuses is a fast and highly informative diagnostic method. It helps to detect acute and chronic diseases, as well as traumatic lesions.

The paranasal sinuses are small cavities located in the frontal, maxillary, sphenoid and ethmoid bones of the skull, and are connected to the nasal cavity. Their main function is to filter and humidify the air entering the lungs, as well as protect the respiratory organs from infections.

X-ray of the sinuses is prescribed in case of suspicion of inflammation, infections, polyps, injuries or other pathologies that may affect their functionality.

At the Oxford Medical Medical Center in Kyiv, you can have an X-ray of the sinuses on a modern digital device that provides accurate results and minimal radiation exposure, as well as get a doctor's consultation. Make an appointment at a time convenient for you.

Symptoms of sinus diseases

Diseases of the paranasal sinuses can cause the following symptoms:

  • a persistent runny nose that does not respond to treatment;
  • nasal congestion or difficulty breathing through the nose;
  • pain in the forehead, cheeks, eyes, or nose, especially when the head is tilted;
  • nasal discharge, especially purulent;
  • swelling of the face or eyes, accompanied by pain;
  • frequent headaches, especially in the frontal area.

These symptoms indicate possible problems with the paranasal sinuses, and X-ray diagnostics allows you to clarify the diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment in a timely manner.

When is a sinus X-ray prescribed?

X-ray allows you to determine the nature of the disease and choose the most effective treatment.
 In some cases, the patient may be prescribed skull X-ray.
 A nose X-ray is performed as prescribed by a doctor.

Indications for the examination may be:

suspected acute or chronic sinusitis

sinusitis, when it is necessary to determine the degree of inflammation or the presence of pus

diagnosis of polyps, cysts, or foreign bodies in the sinuses

suspected nasal fracture after trauma

deviated septum

What does a sinus X-ray show?

X-ray diagnostics of the sinuses makes it possible to detect:

  • swelling of the sinuses in acute or chronic inflammation;
  • the presence of pus, which is a sign of an inflammatory process, as in sinusitis;
  • polyps in the nose, which can block the outflow of mucus and cause breathing problems;
  • pathological formations, in particular cysts in the sinus;
  • curvature of the nasal membrane (X-ray is the most accurate method of diagnosing this pathology), which can cause constant discomfort or chronic sinusitis;
  • cracks, fractures of the nose or other bones.

In some cases, if a more detailed assessment is necessary, a 3D X-ray of the sinuses may be prescribed, which provides a three-dimensional image.

How is X-ray diagnostics of the sinuses performed?

No special preparation is required before an X-ray of the sinuses. The patient only needs to remove all metal objects from the head and neck to avoid distorting the results.

The procedure is performed in a specially equipped room. The patient sits or stands in front of the device, after which the picture is taken. This takes only a few seconds.

In some cases, the doctor may recommend an X-ray of the paranasal sinuses in several projections at the same time to obtain more information about the condition of different sinuses, which is especially important in case of injuries.

At the Oxford Medical clinic in Kyiv, you can undergo X-ray diagnostics on modern equipment that provides clear images and accurate results.

The procedure is quick and painless, and an X-ray of the nose and a description can be obtained almost immediately after the examination.

Types of X-ray diagnostics of the sinuses

Depending on the indications, an X-ray of the sinuses is performed:

In the projection of a straight line

Allows visualization of the frontal and maxillary sinuses, as well as the upper part of the nose. This image is most often used to diagnose sinusitis and sinusitis.

In lateral projection

Helps assess the condition of the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses, which are not always clearly visible on direct images. This projection is useful if polyps in the nose or a cyst in the sinus are suspected.

Chin-frontal projection

Allows for detailed examination of the maxillary and frontal sinuses, as well as the lower part of the nose. It is used in the diagnosis of severe cases of sinusitis or other pathologies such as sinus swelling.
