X-ray of the ribs is a simple and informative diagnostic method that allows you to visualize the bone structures of the chest and detect various diseases or injuries, such as fractures, cracks or tumor processes.

X-ray examination allows to detect the following conditions and diseases:
cracks and rib fractures (X-ray helps to detect and assess the extent of the lesion);
pathological changes in the structure of bones (for example, osteoporosis);
inflammatory processes in bone tissue;
presence of tumor formations or metastases in the ribs;
pathologies of the articular joints between the ribs and the spine;
additional cervical ribs (X-ray allows to detect this congenital pathology).
The fusion of the ribs is also well visualized on X-ray, so an X-ray of a broken rib and an X-ray of a cracked rib can be performed several times until recovery. If necessary, a FLG or lung X-ray may be prescribed to assess the condition of the patient.
A rib x-ray is prescribed in the following cases:
suspected rib fracture or fracture due to trauma or bruising of the rib
suspected tumor formations or development of metastases in the ribs (e.g., rib osteoma)
feeling of pain in the chest area (for example, if intercostal neuralgia is suspected)
Rib X-rays are performed by a doctor when it is necessary to clarify the diagnosis or the effectiveness of treatment. If a rib has been bruised, an X-ray is performed in case of severe pain or other symptoms of a crack or fracture.
Rib X-rays may also be prescribed for treatment of intercostal neuralgia to exclude other possible causes of pain, such as fractures, tumors, or spinal pathologies.
The procedure is quite simple, does not require any prior preparation and takes only a few minutes. The patient is placed in front of the X-ray machine in a standing position. Then one or two images of the ribs are taken, after which the specialist carefully studies them, describes them and gives the patient a conclusion.
X-ray of the ribs can be performed in two projections:
The patient faces the X-ray machine, and the radiation passes through the chest from the front. This angle helps to assess the condition of the front of the ribs and the chest as a whole. The image shows not only the ribs, but also the lungs and heart, which allows you to detect a wider range of pathologies.
During the examination, the patient lies sideways to the device. This approach allows for a detailed examination of the condition of the ribs, spine, intercostal spaces, and costophrenic sinus.
