How does a family doctor’s consultation at home take place?
The family doctor comes to the patient's home at a time chosen by him.
During the consultation, he:
ask the patient about symptoms
study the medical history – find out whether the patient has chronic diseases, review previous test results
measure body temperature and blood pressure
perform auscultation (listening with a stethoscope) of the lungs and heart
perform abdominal palpation
check cervical lymph nodes
examine nasal and throat mucous membranes as well as the skin
Based on the examination, the doctor makes a probable diagnosis and, if necessary, prescribes treatment.
Features of diagnosis and treatment when calling a doctor at home
In most cases, a family doctor evaluates the patient’s symptoms, conducts an examination, and makes a diagnosis, after which they prescribe treatment. It may include taking medications, using local remedies (drops, ointments), diet, limitation of physical activity, etc. If necessary, the doctor may also prescribe intramuscular injections or IV drips, for which a nurse needs to be called at home.
A follow-up consultation is recommended in a few days or a week to assess the effectiveness of treatment. It can be carried out at home, online, or in the clinic.
If it is not possible to make a diagnosis immediately, the doctor may prescribe tests or other examinations. Patients of “Oxford Medical” can call a nurse at home for blood tests and ECG, but more complex diagnostics require visiting the clinic.
For patients with acute conditions, a family doctor may recommend calling emergency medical care and hospitalization in a public or private clinic. For such cases, “Oxford Medical” has an emergency department and a 24-hour surgical inpatient unit.
