CT cancer screening

CT cancer screening in Kyiv

Oncoscreening is an examination of the body using computed tomography with the use of a contrast agent. It allows you to diagnose neoplasms, from 1 mm in size, even before the symptoms of the disease appear. This increases the chances of successful recovery - stage 1 cancer is treated in more than 90% of cases.

Oncoscreening is also prescribed for the diagnosis of metastases. The search for metastases using CT helps to find distant foci of the disease and choose the optimal treatment tactics.CT cancer screening at Oxford Medical

What is included in the CT cancer screening program at Oxford Medical?

At Oxford Medical, the oncoscreening program includes CT with contrast of the following areas:

  • brain;
  • neck soft tissues;
  • thoracic organs;
  • abdominal organs;
  • pelvic organs.

Thus, almost all areas where malignant neoplasms most often form and metastases appear are examined. If necessary, CT can be performed only on certain areas, for example, CT of the lungs with contrast.

Indications for CT oncoscreening

It is recommended to undergo CT oncoscreening of the whole body for preventive purposes. In the early stages, cancer develops asymptomatically and can only be detected with regular examinations.

Indications for CT diagnostics are:

  • genetic predisposition to cancer development (presence of tumors in close relatives);
  • age over 35 years (at this time the frequency of oncological diseases increases in women and men);
  • presence of risk factors (work with carcinogenic substances and in chemical production, unfavorable environmental situation, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc.);
  • presence of benign neoplasms of any localization;
  • presence of alarming symptoms;
  • absence of pregnancy, childbirth and lactation in a woman;
  • constant stress and chronic lack of sleep.

In the presence of the factors listed above, it is recommended to undergo oncoscreening every 1-1.5 years.

Indications for urgent

How to prepare for cancer screening?

You need to prepare properly for cancer screening, as it is performed with a contrast agent.

Patients should:

Avoid foods that cause bloating for 2-3 days.

On the day of the procedure, refuse to take medications (with the consent of the doctor)

Stop eating 4 hours before the procedure.

As prescribed by a doctor, do an enema or take a laxative

Immediately before the procedure, remove all accessories with metal parts.

The rules for preparing for the procedure may vary depending on the area being scanned, so you should check with your doctor in advance. In particular, the differences concern water consumption. In some cases, you need to drink plenty of fluids an hour and a half before the CT scan, while in others, on the contrary, it is contraindicated 4 hours before the examination.

How is CT cancer screening performed?

At Oxford Medical, CT oncoscreening is performed on a new Siemens Somatom Go.UP tomograph, which provides 64-slice scanning of the body with a step of 0.7 mm with minimal radiation exposure.

The examination is performed using a contrast agent, which is injected into a vein. The drug used accumulates in tumors and makes them more visible during scanning. After the procedure, it is naturally excreted from the body.

Before the diagnosis, the patient lies down on a special couch that enters the tomograph tunnel. The doctor remains in an adjacent room and observes the diagnosis through the glass. He can communicate with the patient through an intercom installed in the apparatus. The scan lasts for several minutes and does not cause any pain or discomfort.

The resulting CT images are entered into a computer and processed by a special program. After that, the doctor examines them and writes a conclusion.

"Oxford Medical" is a multidisciplinary medical center with a high-tech diagnostic department and a 24-hour surgical hospital. In the clinic, you can undergo diagnostics using new expert-class equipment and get a consultation from a top-class oncologist with many years of experience.

Contraindications to CT cancer screening

In each specific case, the decision on the possibility of performing CT oncoscreening is made by the doctor individually, taking into account all the risks and benefits for the patient. Computed tomography is a safe and highly informative diagnostic method, however, CT oncoscreening has certain contraindications.

They are divided into absolute and relative:

Absolute contraindications

  • Pregnancy at any stage. Due to ionizing radiation, CT scanning is prohibited for pregnant women, as it may affect fetal development.
  • A serious condition of the patient, when the need for transportation or prolonged stay in one position poses a risk to life.

Relative contraindications

  • Allergy to contrast medium. If oncoscreening involves the use of contrast, the presence of allergic reactions requires additional examination and preparation or the choice of an alternative diagnostic method.
  • Severe renal failure. Since contrast agents are excreted through the kidneys, the use of contrast can be dangerous if their function is impaired.
  • The presence of metal implants that can distort the results of the study (for example, some orthopedic structures).
  • Difficulty with prolonged immobility (for example, in patients with severe pain syndrome or certain neurological diseases).

Q&A

Can a CT scan detect cancer?

CT allows visualization of neoplasms in internal organs, lymph nodes and soft tissues. The tomograph installed at Oxford Medical provides detailed visualization and allows diagnosing tumors from 1 mm in size. However, it is not possible to determine whether they are malignant based on CT results. This requires histological analysis of a tissue sample obtained through a biopsy.

How often should you undergo CT cancer screening for prevention?

The frequency of CT oncoscreening depends on the level of risk of developing cancer. For people with high risk, the examination may be recommended once a year. For patients without risk factors, the frequency is determined by the doctor individually after consultation.
