Treatment of agalactia

Agalactia is a complete lack of milk after childbirth – a rare disorder that should not be confused with insufficient milk - hypogalactia. The latter occurs during lactation much more often.

Manifestations of agalactia are easy to recognize - after the birth of a child, a woman does not have colostrum and milk. This is possible in the absence of the lactocytes themselves or their prolactin receptors.

If the rudiments of the breast are preserved, a slight secretion of colostrum is possible, but the milk does not appear.

The examination of the patient begins at the initial consultation with the breast physician, during which the doctor conducts a check-up and palpation of the mammary glands. The doctor also interviews the patient with the purpose to gather her medical history, which includes information about the patient's health (acute and chronic diseases) and her lifestyle. According to the results of the examination and collection of anamnesis, additional studies are appointed, necessary to clarify the causes of agalactia.

Having found out the reason for the lack of milk, a treatment is prescribed, which, however, is not possible in all cases – it will be inappropriate with absolute agalactia. Treatment of the causes of lack of milk is not always successful, but it is still necessary to eliminate them, even if it is not possible to cure agalactia, because the latter is only a manifestation of serious health problems.
