Goiter treatment

A goiter is not the disease, but the symptom of thyroid problems, manifested by the enlargement of neck through thyroid pathologic growth.

The goiter is most often formed due to the underactive thyroid gland. Due to the insufficient production of hormones, the compensatory enlargement of thyroid tissues occurs and the goiter develops.

Several types of the goiter are distinguished depending on the nature of thyroid disorders:

  • diffuse endemic;
  • nodular (single nodule), multi-nodular (several nodules);
  • autoimmune thyroiditis;
  • subacute thyroiditis;
  • diffuse toxic goiter;
  • thyroid cancer.

There is also the classification of five degrees of enlargement of thyroid tissue.  The enlargement of the second degree is noticeable when swallowing; the third degree is visually different; and the fourth and fifth degrees of the goiter significantly deform the neck, disfeaturing it.

The clinical pattern of each separate goiter and related disease depend on the level of production of thyroid hormones. The most widespread diseases and their symptoms are:

  • feeling a lump in the throat;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • discomfort when swallowing;
  • bulgy eyes;
  • excessive sweating;
  • considerable weight loss with increased hunger;
  • rapid heart rate;
  • reasonless irritability;
  • memory impairment;
  • drowsiness and increased fatigability;
  • hair loss and skin dryness etc.

The nodules in the thyroid gland represent the cysts, the connective tissue, colloids, adenomas, benign hyperplasia as well as thyroid cancer.

As all thyroid diseases are very dangerous for human health and pose a risk of loss of the thyroid gland itself in the advanced condition, you need to timely recognize the alarm signs and undergo the adequate treatment.

The endocrinologists of Oxford Medical Kyiv clinic perform the early diagnosis of thyroid pathologies through:

  • thyroid ultrasound;
  • laboratory blood testing for thyroid hormones;
  • biopsy of thyroid nodules, performed under the control of the ultrasound (determining whether the neoplasms are benign or malignant).

The precise diagnosis and effective treatment is what you can be confident in when applying to the endocrinologists of Oxford Medical clinic. If you apply to us, we will necessarily help you.
