Electroencephalography

Electroencephalography in Kyiv

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a modern, highly accurate method for studying brain activity that helps detect functional and organic disorders in its functioning.

The brain is a complex system, and its function depends on the continuous transmission of electrical signals between neurons. If this interaction is disrupted, various neurological disorders may occur, including headaches, dizziness, loss of consciousness, seizures, and sleep disturbances. Electroencephalography makes it possible to assess the functional state of the brain and detect these disorders.

At the Oxford Medical clinic in Kyiv, EEG is performed using modern digital equipment, which ensures high accuracy and detail of results. The study is interpreted by experienced neurologists who analyze the obtained data and provide recommendations for further examinations or treatment.

Indications for EEG

A doctor may prescribe an EEG in the following cases:

  • Frequent headaches, dizziness, fainting;

  • Sleep disturbances, insomnia;

  • Suspected epilepsy, seizures;

  • Panic attacks, anxiety states;

  • Assessment of brain condition after head injuries, strokes, neurosurgical operations;

  • Inflammatory processes, brain tumors;

  • Cognitive impairments (memory loss, poor concentration);

  • Monitoring the effectiveness of neurological treatment.

EEG helps detect disorders at early stages and adjust treatment tactics to achieve the best outcome.

What does EEG show?

Electroencephalography allows assessment of the functional state of the brain, detection of abnormalities in its functioning, and determination of the nature of these changes—whether they are of organic (caused by structural damage) or functional (caused by temporary disorders) origin.

With EEG, a doctor can:

  • Assess overall brain activity – determine the level of excitation or inhibition, which is important in diagnosing neuroses, panic attacks, depressive states;

  • Identify pathological foci – detect areas of increased or decreased activity, which may indicate the presence of epilepsy, tumors, or the consequences of trauma or stroke;

  • Study brain rhythms – analyze alpha, beta, theta, and delta waves, their frequency and synchronicity, which helps diagnose sleep disorders, developmental delays in children, cognitive impairments;

  • Reveal hidden seizure activity – even if a patient does not have obvious seizures, EEG can detect a tendency toward epileptic activity;

  • Evaluate treatment effectiveness – the method is used to monitor patients undergoing therapy after strokes, injuries, epilepsy, or other neurological diseases.

EEG not only detects disorders but also allows tracking changes over time, enabling control of the treatment process and assessment of its effectiveness.

How is EEG performed?

Electroencephalography is a non-invasive, painless procedure that requires no complex preparation and can be performed in both adults and children. EEG is carried out in a specially equipped room without bright light or extraneous noise that may affect the results.

Main stages of the examination:

1. Patient preparation: before the procedure, the patient comfortably sits or lies down. The doctor explains the process to avoid anxiety or tension that could affect the results. A special conductive gel is applied to the scalp to ensure good electrode contact.

2. Electrode placement: a special cap with built-in electrodes is placed on the patient’s head, or electrodes are fixed individually using special attachments. The electrodes are connected to the device that reads the brain’s bioelectrical signals.

3. Recording the electroencephalogram: the patient remains at rest with closed eyes. The recording lasts from 20 to 30 minutes during which brain activity is registered. The doctor may ask the patient to perform functional tests, including:

  • Opening and closing the eyes – to assess the brain’s response to changes in visual input.

  • Deep and rhythmic breathing (hyperventilation test) – helps detect hidden pathological changes.

  • Photostimulation (flashes of light at a specific frequency) – used to evaluate the brain’s reaction, especially if epilepsy is suspected.

4. Result analysis: the data recorded during the study is saved as a graph of the brain’s electrical activity (electroencephalogram). The neurologist analyzes the characteristics of brain rhythms, identifies possible abnormalities, and determines their nature and location. After decoding the results, the patient receives a report with a detailed description of brain activity and recommendations for further examinations or treatment, if necessary.

Preparing for EEG

To obtain the most accurate results, it is recommended to:

  • Avoid caffeine, energy drinks, and other stimulants for 12 hours before the examination;

  • Get a good night’s sleep – fatigue and lack of sleep can affect brain activity;

  • Continue taking prescribed medications (in case of chronic illnesses) as per your doctor’s recommendations;

  • If necessary, wash your hair – do not use gels, sprays, or oils before the procedure to ensure proper electrode contact with the scalp.
