Liver ultrasound at the private clinic Oxford Medical Kyiv

Pelvic ultrasound

Ultrasound diagnostics is one of the simplest and at the same time informative examination methods in modern medicine. It allows doctors to quickly assess the condition of internal organs, detect possible changes and determine further treatment tactics.

That is why doctors often recommend pelvic ultrasound as one of the first stages of diagnostics when pain in the lower abdomen appears, menstrual cycle disorders occur or problems with urination arise. At the medical center “Oxford Medical”, ultrasound examinations are performed using the latest expert-class equipment, which allows accurate results to be obtained.

What is an ultrasound of the pelvic organs

Pelvic ultrasound is a fast, safe and painless diagnostic method that allows doctors to assess the condition of the internal organs located in the lower part of the abdominal cavity. The examination is performed using ultrasound waves that are reflected from tissues and form an image on the screen of the device.

During the ultrasound, the doctor evaluates the pelvic organs, which include:

  • the uterus;
  • the ovaries;
  • the urinary bladder;
  • surrounding tissues and vessels.

Thanks to ultrasound, the doctor can detect structural changes in organs, inflammatory processes, neoplasms or other disorders. For example, during diagnostics, signs of diseases such as endometriosis are sometimes detected, which is associated with the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity.

Types of pelvic ultrasound

Depending on the clinical situation, the doctor may recommend different types of pelvic ultrasound. The choice of method depends on the age of the patient, existing symptoms and the purpose of diagnostics.

Transabdominal ultrasound

The examination is performed through the anterior abdominal wall using an ultrasound probe, which the doctor moves over the surface of the abdomen. The method allows the doctor to assess the location, shape and size of the pelvic organs, as well as detect possible structural changes. Transabdominal ultrasound is often used during the initial examination or for a general assessment of the condition of the organs.

Transvaginal ultrasound

The examination is performed using a special vaginal probe that is inserted into the vagina. Due to the close location of the probe to the pelvic organs, this method allows a more detailed assessment of the condition of the uterus, endometrium and ovaries, and also allows even minor changes in tissues to be detected. Transvaginal ultrasound is often used to clarify the results of diagnostics.

Indications for diagnostics

Ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs may be prescribed both when symptoms appear and for
preventive purposes. This is one of the basic diagnostic methods in gynecology that allows
the condition of the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic structures to be assessed.

The most common indications for the examination:

pain or discomfort in the lower part of the abdomen;

menstrual cycle disorders or changes in the nature of menstruation;

difficulties with conception and examination when planning pregnancy;

suspicion of gynecological diseases, neoplasms or inflammatory processes.

List of diseases

In some cases, the examination helps to determine the cause of disorders of the urinary system. For example, if cystitis is suspected, the doctor may assess the condition of the urinary bladder and rule out other possible pathologies.

Main contraindications

Ultrasound examination is considered a safe diagnostic method and practically has no absolute contraindications. It is not associated with radiation exposure, therefore it may be performed when necessary even several times.

In some cases, performing a transvaginal examination may be limited, for example after gynecological surgical interventions or in the presence of pronounced inflammatory processes of the vaginal mucosa. In such situations, transabdominal ultrasound examination is usually used, which also allows the condition of the pelvic organs to be assessed.

Preparation for pelvic ultrasound

Proper preparation for pelvic ultrasound involves following several recommendations that help obtain more accurate examination results.

If a transabdominal ultrasound is planned (through the anterior abdominal wall), before the examination it is usually recommended to moderately fill the urinary bladder. For this, approximately 1 hour before the procedure it is necessary to drink several glasses of still water and refrain from urination.

Also on the day before the examination it is advisable to avoid foods that may cause increased gas formation in the intestines. In some cases, the doctor may additionally recommend medications that reduce flatulence.

If a transvaginal ultrasound is planned, special preparation is usually not required. Before the examination it is recommended to empty the urinary bladder.

Frequently asked questions

On which day of the cycle should a pelvic ultrasound be done?

Most often, ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs is recommended to be performed on the 5–7th day of the menstrual cycle, immediately after the end of menstruation. During this period, the endometrium has a small thickness, therefore it is easier for the doctor to assess the condition of the uterus and ovaries and detect possible changes. However, in some cases the examination may also be prescribed on other days of the cycle — this depends on the purpose of the examination.

Can you eat before a pelvic ultrasound?

In most cases, before an ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs you can eat, but it is advisable to choose light food. It is recommended to avoid foods that cause increased gas formation, for example legumes, carbonated drinks or a large amount of fresh vegetables. If a transabdominal examination is planned, it is usually also necessary to drink water to fill the urinary bladder.

Can a pelvic ultrasound be performed during menstruation?

In most cases, ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs is attempted to be performed after the completion of menstruation. However, sometimes the doctor may prescribe an ultrasound during menstruation if it is necessary to assess certain changes in the uterus or clarify the cause of complaints. The final timing of the examination is determined individually depending on the clinical situation.

Can you drink coffee before a pelvic ultrasound?

Before an ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs, it is better to refrain from coffee and other drinks that may stimulate the function of the intestines or the urinary bladder. Caffeine sometimes increases intestinal peristalsis and may cause bloating, which complicates the visualization of organs during the examination. It is best to drink ordinary still water before the procedure.
