Genital itching in women — is a common symptom that can occur at any age. It is important to understand that itching — is not a separate disease, but a symptom that can accompany various conditions. Sometimes discomfort in the intimate area occurs temporarily, for example after using a new hygiene product or wearing tight underwear. In other cases, the cause may be inflammatory, infectious, dermatological, or hormonal disorders that require diagnosis and properly selected treatment.
In this article, we will discuss why itching, burning, and other unpleasant sensations occur, which symptoms may indicate different diseases, and what to do if itching in intimate areas does not go away. We will also explain when home measures are not enough and it is necessary to see a gynecologist.
Why itching of the female genital organs occurs
The cause of itching of the female genital organs may be associated both with irritation of the skin and mucous membrane and with serious diseases.
Most often, vulvar itching occurs due to:
- intimate hygiene products, scented pads, lubricants, or laundry products;
- chafing from underwear, sweating, shaving, or depilation;
- dermatitis and other skin diseases;
- fungal, bacterial, and some other infections;
- dryness of the mucous membrane when estrogen levels decrease;
- less commonly — systemic diseases.
To understand the possible cause, it is important to consider not only the intensity of the itching, but also its location, duration, the presence of redness, rash, discharge, unpleasant odor, or pain.
Itching of the labia without discharge
- changing an intimate hygiene product;
- using scented pads;
- wearing synthetic underwear;
- a new laundry product;
- shaving;
- depilation.
Another possible cause is contact dermatitis. In this case, vaginal itching may be accompanied by dryness, redness, burning, or a rash on areas that have come into contact with the irritant.
The absence of discharge does not exclude diseases of the vulvar skin. For example, with lichen sclerosus, severe itching, cracks, and soreness may occur. Such changes require examination by a doctor.
Itching and burning of the labia
Itching of the labia and burning occur more often with pronounced irritation or inflammation of the skin and mucous membrane. Symptoms may worsen after urination, sexual intercourse, shaving, or the use of hygiene products.
Such manifestations are possible with microtrauma, dermatological diseases, and vulvovaginal infections. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, candidiasis may cause itching, redness, swelling, and burning, but these symptoms are not specific only to a fungal infection.
Doctors at «Oxford Medical» recommend: do not use antifungal medications based only on itching or burning. First, the exact cause of the symptoms should be established.
Redness and itching of the labia
Redness and itching of the labia may be a reaction to an irritant or a manifestation of an inflammatory process. First of all, contact irritation should be ruled out if the symptoms appeared after:
- changing a hygiene product;
- using new pads;
- using a lubricant;
- changing laundry detergent;
- shaving or depilation.
If swelling, pronounced soreness, cracks, rash, or unusual discharge accompany the redness, a doctor's examination is necessary. It is especially important not to postpone seeking medical attention if the changes do not go away within several days or regularly recur.
Burning of the external genital organs
Burning of the external genital organs in women may occur after depilation, chafing, the use of aggressive hygiene products, with dryness of the mucous membrane, microtrauma, or inflammation.
Doctors at «Oxford Medical» explain: if burning in the genital area intensifies during urination, it is important to determine exactly where the discomfort is felt. Urine coming into contact with irritated vulvar skin may cause external burning, while stinging and pain during urination itself may be associated with diseases of the urinary system.
During perimenopause and after menopause, similar symptoms may be associated with decreased estrogen levels. Due to dryness and thinning of the mucous membrane, itching and discomfort during sexual intercourse may also occur.
Why the vagina itches
Unpleasant sensations in the vagina that are accompanied by changes in the amount, color, consistency, or odor of discharge always require a gynecological examination. The reasons why the vagina itches may include:
- disruption of the vaginal microflora;
- candidiasis;
- vaginitis;
- sexually transmitted infections;
- dryness of the mucous membrane due to hormonal changes.
It is not always possible to distinguish these conditions accurately by external manifestations. Therefore, if the vagina itches, the symptoms are pronounced, or regularly recur, it is better not to choose treatment on your own, but to see a doctor.
Why the clitoris itches
Itching in the clitoral area is most often associated with irritation of the surrounding skin and mucous membrane. It may be triggered by shaving, friction from underwear, sweating, scented hygiene products, or lubricants. If redness, swelling, cracks, rash, or changes in the surface of the skin are present at the same time, dermatological diseases of the vulva should be ruled out.
Why the pubic area itches in women
Itching of the pubic area is most often associated with the condition of the skin and hair in this area. Itching may occur after shaving or waxing, with ingrown hairs, friction from clothing, increased sweating, or inflammation of the hair follicles.
If red painful elements or pustules appear around the hairs, folliculitis may be a possible cause. Severe itching together with the detection of small insects or nits on the pubic hair may be a sign of pubic lice.
Itching and burning in different conditions

Genital itching in women does not always occur due to skin irritation or an allergy to hygiene products. Severe or prolonged itching may occur against the background of diabetes mellitus, and when burning, unusual discharge, and an unpleasant odor appear, one of the likely causes is infection. In such cases, it is important to determine exactly what caused the symptoms, because the approach to treatment will be different.
Genital itching in diabetes mellitus
In diabetes mellitus, itching in the vagina may be associated with a prolonged increase in blood glucose levels. High glycemia contributes to dryness of the skin and mucous membranes, worsens their protective properties, and creates conditions for more frequent development of infections.
Genital itching in diabetes mellitus is especially common when the disease is inadequately controlled. It may be accompanied by dryness, irritation, burning, and when an infection develops — redness or changes in discharge. One of the common problems in women with diabetes is vulvovaginal candidiasis, the risk of which increases with high glucose levels.
Itching and discomfort in the vagina with infections
Itching in the vagina may accompany candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and other infections. At the same time, it is not always possible to determine the cause accurately based on symptoms alone, because itching, burning, irritation, and changes in discharge may occur with different diseases.
The most typical manifestations may differ:
| Disease | Characteristic manifestations |
| Candidiasis | pronounced itching and burning, redness, soreness, thick white discharge |
| Bacterial vaginosis | thin white or grayish discharge, a characteristic «fishy» odor; itching and burning may be absent or mildly pronounced |
| Trichomoniasis | itching, burning, redness, discomfort during urination, an increase in the amount of discharge, which may be white, yellowish, or greenish |
If candidiasis or another infection is suspected, treatment should not be selected independently based only on the nature of the symptoms. For example, even itching and thick discharge typical of candidiasis are not specific only to this disease.
If burning in the vagina or itching is accompanied by unusual discharge, an unpleasant odor, pain, discomfort after unprotected sexual intercourse, or regularly recurs, it is advisable to see a gynecologist and get tested.
What to do for genital itching
The approach depends on when the itching appeared and what other symptoms accompany it. If it occurred immediately after shaving, using a new hygiene product, pads, lubricant, or laundry detergent, the first step is to stop contact with the possible irritant. If there is unusual discharge, rash, pronounced swelling, or pain, diagnosis is necessary.
Do not scratch the skin even if severe genital itching is difficult to tolerate. Damage to the skin surface may lead to increased burning and the development of a secondary infection.
How to get rid of itching in intimate areas at home
Home measures do not treat candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, dermatological, or other diseases, but they can reduce itching until its cause is established. For temporary relief, you can:
- apply a cool compress to the external genital organs through a clean soft cloth for 5–10 minutes;
- if the vulvar skin itself is irritated, apply a thin layer of plain white petroleum jelly without fragrances — it creates a protective barrier and reduces skin contact with moisture and other irritants;
- avoid shaving, waxing, and other procedures in this area until the irritation disappears;
- reduce friction if possible: temporarily avoid wearing thongs, very tight jeans, leggings, and synthetic underwear.
Such recommendations for the care of irritated vulvar skin are provided by University of Iowa Health Care: in particular, specialists advise avoiding friction and scented products, and allow the use of a thin layer of white petroleum jelly to protect the skin.
If the itching does not decrease, becomes more intense, or quickly returns after temporary improvement, it is not advisable to keep trying to suppress it with home remedies — the cause needs to be established.
Doctors at «Oxford Medical» recommend: do not start antibacterial or antifungal treatment without establishing the cause of the symptoms. Medications effective for candidiasis do not treat bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, so incorrectly selected therapy may not provide results and may delay proper treatment.
What to wash with when itching occurs
According to NHS recommendations, when itching and irritation occur, it is advisable to avoid scented soap, intimate gels, and hot baths. It is better to wash with warm water without soap. If necessary, a mild product without fragrances or dyes, intended for sensitive skin, may be used.
Water or a hygiene product should come into contact only with the external genital organs. Douching is not recommended because it may disrupt the natural microflora and increase irritation.
Doctors at «Oxford Medical» warn: solutions of baking soda, vinegar, potassium permanganate, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, or concentrated herbal decoctions should not be used for washing. They do not eliminate the cause of itching and may further irritate the skin and mucous membrane.
How to get rid of burning in intimate areas at home
At home, burning can be temporarily reduced, but it can only be completely eliminated after the cause has been addressed. If the symptom is associated with irritation of the external genital organs, gentle hygiene and avoiding aggressive products may help.
If burning occurs mainly during urination and is felt externally, the genital organs can be gently rinsed with warm water immediately after urination. This helps reduce irritation of the skin and mucous membrane.
If burning is felt inside the vagina and is accompanied by discharge, an unpleasant odor, or pain during sexual intercourse, home remedies will not eliminate the cause. Such symptoms may be associated with inflammation or infection and require a gynecological examination.
Burning in the urethral area together with frequent urges to urinate, stinging, or pain requires separate attention. In this case, diseases of the urinary system should be ruled out rather than treating the symptom as an exclusively gynecological problem.
When to see a gynecologist

You should make an appointment for a gynecologist consultation if you develop:
- burning and severe genital itching;
- unusual discharge or a sudden change in its amount;
- an unpleasant odor;
- pronounced redness, swelling, or rash;
- lower abdominal pain;
- pain during sexual intercourse;
- stinging or pain during urination;
- cracks, ulcers, blisters, or other changes on the skin and mucous membrane;
- bloody discharge outside menstruation;
- fever.
During the examination, the doctor assesses the condition of the vulva and vagina, the nature of the discharge, and, if necessary, prescribes laboratory tests. If necessary, extended colposcopy may also be performed to assess the cervix. Based on the diagnostic results, the gynecologist prescribes appropriate treatment aimed not only at reducing the symptoms but also at eliminating the cause of their occurrence.
Prevention of itching and discomfort in the intimate area
For prevention, it is advisable to:
- wash with warm water and avoid using scented gels and soap for the intimate area;
- wear comfortable underwear made of breathable fabrics and avoid staying in a wet swimsuit or sportswear for a long time;
- change wet underwear after exercise or significant sweating;
- avoid products that have previously caused irritation or an allergic reaction;
- use a clean tool when shaving and do not treat irritated skin with alcohol-based products;
- use condoms to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections;
- in diabetes mellitus, maintain the blood glucose level recommended by your doctor.
If itching or burning regularly returns, you should not repeatedly use the same suppositories or ointments on your own. Recurrent symptoms may have different causes, so in such a situation it is important to undergo an examination and select treatment and prevention according to the established diagnosis.
