Hair transplantation in men and women

Hair transplantation allows men and women to get rid of baldness and restore the natural growth and density of hair. Most often hair follicle transplantation is used for androgenetic alopecia. It happens to be in 90% of cases of male baldness. In women this type is much less common. More common is diffuse alopecia, which develops as a result of hormonal failures, certain diseases, prolonged use of a number of medications, stress and lack of nutrients in the diet. Diffuse alopecia can be treated conservatively. Hair transplantation is performed in cases where other methods are ineffective. Before planning this procedure, it is advisable to consult with a trichologist and find out the cause and nature of baldness.

Before performing hair transplantation you need to pass a simple preparation. You should stop taking medications that affect blood clotting (aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and others – you should consult your doctor) 7 days before the procedure. It is recommended to give up any alcoholic beverages in 2 days before the procedure. You also need to pass urine and blood tests. General tests, blood biochemistry, coagulogram, and diagnostics for common infections are usually prescribed.

Hair transplantation is performed at the inpatient hospital under local anesthesia. The procedure takes from 1-3 hours to 6-8 hours depending on the size of the receding hairline.  

FUE method of hair transplantation is carried out in several stages:

1. Preparation of the skin area (most often the nape of the neck) selected for hair follicle sampling. The hair in this place is cut to the required length, and the skin is treated with an antiseptic.
2. The skin is anesthetized by the local anesthetic.
3. Sampling of the grafts is carried out with the help of a special tool. It gently removes the hair along with the follicle. The specialist takes the optimal number of grafts so that the density and volume of hair on the donor site are preserved.
4. Preparation of the area where the follicles will be transplanted. The surgeon makes small holes in the skin that are necessary for transplantation with a special tool.
5. Hair transplantation with the help of a micro-tweezer is carried out. In some cases patients with a large area of baldness receive a different method of hair transplantation - Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). It is called a flap or suture since a flap of skin is extracted on the occipital zone to obtain donor follicles. After that separate grafts are formed from it for transplantation.

Hair transplantation is performed on an outpatient basis, and the patient can leave the clinic immediately after the procedure. During 2-3 days a patient may need to wear a bandage applied to the area of hair extraction for a quick healing of microtrauma. At this time it is forbidden to wash the hair, to go to the sauna, to sunbathe and go in for sports. It is also necessary to take care of the area with transplanted hair, avoid skin injury.  

Within a week after the procedure small red dots may remain at the sites of hair extraction and transplantation. After a few weeks the hair from the transplanted bulbs may begin to fall out. This is a natural process of renewal. Active growth of transplanted hair begins in 2-3 months. Thus, you can fully evaluate the result of the procedure in 4-6 months. By this time the hair begins to look natural and it is impossible to notice that a transplantation has been performed.

There are very few contraindications for hair transplantation, since this is a low-traumatic procedure, and the follicles used belong to the patient himself. This eliminates the possibility of hair rejection or other complications. Temporarily postpone the hair transplantation is necessary in case of an acute illness (cold, flu) or exacerbation of a chronic disease. The procedure is completely contraindicated in patients with infectious skin diseases, blood diseases, cancer and diabetes.
