Treatment of hepatitis

Hepatitis treatment

Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver caused by viruses, autoimmune disorders, ingestion of toxic substances or medications. The liver performs vital functions: neutralizes toxins, participates in metabolism, synthesizes proteins and vitamins. Any damage to this organ can lead to severe consequences for the entire body.

The most common viral hepatitis are A, B and C. They differ in the mode of transmission, clinical course and outcomes. In the absence of timely treatment, the disease can go into a chronic form, provoking the development of fibrosis, cirrhosis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. But with timely diagnosis and properly selected therapy hepatitis can be successfully controlled or completely cured. Oxford Medical Center provides comprehensive treatment of hepatitis in accordance with international standards, with an individual approach to each patient.

Types and forms of hepatitis

Hepatitis is classified into several types depending on the cause. The most dangerous and widespread are viral forms, each of which has its own clinical and therapeutic features.

Hepatitis A (HAV)

  • Transmitted through contaminated water, food, or poor hygiene.

  • Has an acute course, does not become chronic.

  • Responds well to treatment and rarely causes complications.

  • Lifelong immunity develops after recovery.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

  • Transmitted via blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child.

  • Often asymptomatic, especially in early stages.

  • Can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

  • Effectively controlled with antiviral therapy.

  • Vaccination is available for prevention.

Hepatitis C (HCV)

  • Spread through contact with infected blood (injections, surgeries, tattoos).

  • More than 70% of cases become chronic.

  • Often detected accidentally during routine testing.

  • Modern medications can cure hepatitis C in 95–99% of cases.

Hepatitis D (HDV)

  • Occurs only in individuals infected with hepatitis B.

  • Aggravates the disease course and accelerates fibrosis.

  • Difficult to treat, requires a combined approach.

Hepatitis E (HEV)

  • Found in countries with poor sanitation.

  • Usually mild, but can be dangerous for pregnant women.

Autoimmune hepatitis

  • Caused by the immune system attacking liver cells.

  • Not virus-related, requires immunosuppressive therapy.

  • Progresses rapidly to cirrhosis if left untreated.

Hepatitis Symptoms

In chronic hepatitis, symptoms may be mild or absent, making timely diagnosis difficult. This is why regular health check-ups and medical consultations for any health concerns are essential.

Diagnosis

Hepatitis diagnosis begins with a consultation with a gastroenterologist or infectious disease specialist. The doctor collects a medical history, assesses symptoms, and evaluates infection risks. Then, a comprehensive examination is prescribed.

Essential diagnostic methods:

  • Blood tests for viral hepatitis markers (HBsAg, Anti-HCV, etc.);

  • PCR diagnostics — detection of viral RNA/DNA and viral load;

  • Blood biochemistry (ALT, AST, bilirubin, ALP, GGT);

  • Coagulogram and complete blood count;

  • Abdominal ultrasound;

  • Liver elastography (fibroscan) to assess fibrosis;

  • If necessary — liver biopsy.

At Oxford Medical, diagnostics are performed using modern laboratory and instrumental equipment. This allows for an accurate diagnosis and selection of an effective treatment strategy.

Treatment

Treatment of hepatitis depends on its type, stage and general condition of the patient.
Hepatitis A in most cases does not require specific therapy - symptomatic treatment, bed rest, diet and hepatoprotectors are indicated.
Hepatitis B requires an individual approach: in the acute form - observation and supportive therapy, in chronic - the use of antiviral drugs aimed at suppressing viral activity and preventing complications.
Hepatitis C can be treated with modern direct antiviral agents (DAA), the effectiveness of which exceeds 95%. The standard course lasts from 8 to 12 weeks.

Regardless of the form of the disease, an important role is played by diet, avoidance of alcohol, control of concomitant pathologies. Dynamic monitoring of blood counts and liver function is carried out.

In the medical center “Oxford Medical” developed a comprehensive treatment program for hepatitis. Experienced specialists select therapy, focusing on modern clinical recommendations. Patients receive comprehensive support, starting from diagnosis and ending with a full course of therapy with subsequent monitoring of effectiveness.
