Thrombectomy

Thrombectomy in Kyiv

Thrombectomy is an operation to remove a blood clot or atherosclerotic plaque from the lumen of an artery or vein. Depending on the indications, it is performed:

  • Endovascular - a catheter with a special balloon is inserted through a puncture into the vessel, with the help of which the surgeon captures and removes the blood clot. The operation is performed under the control of angiography or X-ray.
  • The classical method is an open operation, during which the vessel is cut and the blood clot is removed using a scalpel.

At "Oxord Medical", thrombectomy is performed by highly qualified vascular surgeons with many years of experience. Thanks to this, as well as the availability of new diagnostic and surgical equipment, each patient receives high-quality medical care.

The surgery department works around the clock. If symptoms of thrombosis appear, you can contact the clinic at any time, including at night, by calling an ambulance. Thrombosis has a high risk of complications, so under no circumstances should you delay seeking medical attention and treatment.

Indications for thrombectomy

Indications for thrombectomy

Thrombectomy is performed in the presence of a thrombus in the artery or vein. The operation is an extreme method, therefore it is prescribed only when the pathology cannot be eliminated by conservative methods or with the help of thrombolysis and there is a high risk of complications.

The main indications for thrombectomy are:

  • partial or complete blockage of a large vessel;
  • blockage of a long section of the vessel by a thrombus;
  • the presence of a floating thrombus (fixed to the vessel wall on only one side, which is associated with a high risk of detachment, migration and development of thrombosis of a narrow artery or vein).

Symptoms of developing deep vein thrombosis

If such symptoms appear, you should contact a phlebologist or vascular surgeon as soon as possible.

When developing deep vein thrombosis the patient may experience the following symptoms:

swelling of the legs or arms

feeling cold, numbness, tingling

visually noticeable swelling of blood vessels

paleness, bluish skin below the affected vessel

List of diseases

Preparing for surgery

Before surgery, the patient must undergo diagnostics. Its goal is to clarify the diagnosis, select the optimal method of surgical intervention, and exclude contraindications.

Dopplerography is most often performed to assess the condition of the vessels. This is an ultrasound examination that allows for real-time visualization of blood flow, the presence of blood clots and other pathologies, and their exact location and size.

If necessary, the patient may also be prescribed angiography, Ultrasound of the heart, and ultrasound of the vessels of the head and neck. Also, immediately before surgery, a cardiogram (ECG) and laboratory tests are performed.

How is thrombectomy performed?

Thrombectomy is performed under local (spinal) or general (general) anesthesia. The choice of technique depends on the patient's health and the complexity of the operation.

Next, if the operation is performed endovascularly, the surgeon punctures a vein, most often in the inguinal or femoral artery. After that, a catheter with a special balloon is inserted into it. Using it, he carefully captures and removes the thrombus. All actions are monitored using angiography or X-ray.

During an open-access operation, the surgeon makes an incision in the area of the affected part of the vessel. After that, he installs clamps above and below to temporarily stop blood flow, removes the thrombus and sutures the vessel, restoring its integrity.

Endovascular thrombectomy is a minimally invasive operation. It allows you to minimize damage to healthy tissues. As a result, the risk of complications is reduced and the rehabilitation period is easier and faster.

Surgeons at Oxford Medical perform most vascular surgeries using the endovascular method, if the patient's condition allows it.

How is thrombectomy performed?

Rehabilitation after thrombectomy

Bed rest is required for about a day after the operation. The next day, the surgeon examines and changes the dressings. If everything is fine, the patient is allowed to get up and walk around the clinic. On the third day, the patient is usually discharged.

During the rehabilitation period, it is recommended to:

  • monitor the dryness and sterility of the dressings, do not remove them yourself;
  • take the medications prescribed by the doctor;
  • keep your legs slightly elevated when lying down;
  • wear compression hosiery (as prescribed by the doctor);
  • avoid heavy physical exertion, visiting the pool, bathhouse or sauna, do not take a hot bath;
  • refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages;
  • be examined by a vascular surgeon every 3-6 months.

Potential complications: what are the dangers of refusing surgery?

In a healthy person, blood moves freely through all vessels, providing organs and tissues with oxygen and nutrients. In the event of a thrombus formation, the lumen of the vessel narrows at the site of its fixation, which leads to impaired blood circulation. The patient experiences swelling, pain, numbness and other symptoms. Conservative or surgical treatment is performed to restore blood flow.

Thrombectomy is prescribed in cases where it is no longer possible to remove the thrombus in any other way. Therefore, vascular surgeons do not recommend refusing surgery or postponing it.

When blood clots form in the vessels, there is a risk of developing:

  • chronic venous insufficiency;
  • impaired blood supply to tissues and organs, which can lead to necrosis;
  • myocardial infarction (in case of blockage of the coronary artery by a thrombus);
  • cerebral stroke (with carotid artery thrombosis);
  • pulmonary embolism (can occur when a blood clot breaks off; is a life-threatening condition).

Thrombectomy: price at the Oxford Medical clinic

The price of thrombectomy depends on several factors. First, in which artery or vein the thrombus is located. Second, the operation is performed using the classical or endovascular method. The type of anesthesia is also important - spinal or general, the need for simultaneous stenting or bypass surgery, and other individual characteristics of the patient.

You can find out the prices for surgical treatment at «Oxord Medical» here, but only a surgeon can give you a more accurate estimate of the cost after studying your medical history and examination results. Make an appointment with a vascular surgeon at a time convenient for you.

Our main goal is to provide each patient with timely medical care and to do it in the best way. Therefore, before prescribing an operation, we conduct a thorough diagnosis and, if possible, use conservative treatment methods.

Answers to popular questions about thrombectomy

What is thrombectomy?

Thrombectomy is a surgical procedure that removes a blood clot from an artery or vein. It is performed using a minimally invasive endovascular technique – through a puncture in the vessel, or by the classical method – through an incision and excision with a scalpel. It is prescribed when the blood clot partially or completely blocks blood flow, which threatens life-threatening complications.

How is a blood clot removed?

The operation to remove a blood clot is called thrombectomy. It is performed using an endovascular technique – an incision is made in the vessel through which a catheter with a special balloon is inserted. Using it, the surgeon captures the blood clot and removes it. The procedure is performed under X-ray control. If the use of a minimally invasive technique is impossible, an open operation is performed – part of the affected vessel is removed with a scalpel.

The cost of a thrombus removal operation depends on several factors: the type and location of the affected vessel, the size of the thrombus, whether the operation is performed endovascularly or through open access, and other individual characteristics of the patient.
