Short frenulum treatment

The frenulum is a strip of skin that connects the glans penis to the foreskin. During an erection, it helps regulate the position of the penis. If the frenulum is short, it causes pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse.

In most men, a short frenulum is an anatomical feature. However, certain conditions can also contribute to this issue, including:

• chronic balanoposthitis;

• injuries to the groin area;

• wearing tight underwear and clothing.

Diabetes mellitus is also considered a risk factor, as it impairs tissue regeneration.

A short frenulum can lead to the following issues:

• pain during erection;

• cracks and microtears near the frenulum;

• frenulum rupture with heavy bleeding;

• skin inflammation;

• premature ejaculation;

• erectile dysfunction.

A short frenulum hinders the retraction of the foreskin, causing pain during intercourse and skin trauma. One of the most common complications is frenulum rupture, often accompanied by profuse bleeding that is difficult to stop. A scar usually remains after healing.

Surgical treatment is indicated for a short frenulum. Conservative methods cannot resolve the issue.

Frenuloplasty (short frenulum surgery) is a simple procedure performed in a day surgery setting. Local anesthesia is used for pain relief, and the patient can leave the clinic a few hours after the operation.

Complete recovery takes 2–3 weeks.

Before surgery, the patient must undergo diagnostics to rule out contraindications. The main ones include:

• blood clotting disorders;

• liver failure;

• kidney failure;

• diseases of the genitourinary system;

• malignant tumors;

• skin tears in the surgical area.

Most contraindications are temporary. In the case of acute conditions, surgery is performed after treatment. For chronic diseases, it is scheduled during remission.
