Female urologist

Female urologist

Female urology is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary system in women. Despite the common stereotype that a urologist is exclusively a “male doctor,” in practice urologists treat women just as often.

Discomfort or pain during urination, a feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen, urinary incontinence — these are all symptoms for which it is advisable to consult a female urologist. Timely treatment helps prevent disease progression, reduce the risk of complications, and return to everyday life without constant discomfort.

When a Woman Needs a Urologist Consultation

Diseases of the urinary system in women often have nonspecific manifestations that
can easily be confused with gynecological or general inflammatory conditions. That is why it is important to pay attention even to seemingly minor discomfort.

The most common symptoms for which it is recommended to see a urologist include:

pain, burning, or stinging during urination, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying;

frequent or false urges to urinate, including at night;

pain or a feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen or lumbar region;

urinary incontinence, changes in urine color or odor, or the appearance of impurities in the urine.

List of diseases

Even in the absence of pronounced pain, these symptoms may indicate the development of a urological condition. Timely scheduling of a urologist appointment for women helps avoid complications and the transition of the disease to a chronic form.

What Conditions a Female Urologist Treats

A urologist for women specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary system in women. The doctor assesses the condition of the bladder, urethra, kidneys, and ureters and selects the optimal treatment strategy.

Most often, women consult a urologist for the following conditions:

  • cystitis (acute, chronic, recurrent);
  • urethritis and other inflammatory processes of the urethra;
  • pyelonephritis and kidney infections;
  • urolithiasis;
  • overactive or neurogenic bladder syndrome;
  • various forms of urinary incontinence;
  • interstitial cystitis;
  • complications after previous urinary tract infections;
  • tumor diseases of the bladder or kidneys.

Special attention in female urology is given to the treatment of chronic and recurrent conditions that may persist for a long time with minimal symptoms but gradually impair quality of life.

Diagnosis of Urological Diseases in Women

Diagnosis is of key importance, as many diseases of the urinary system have similar symptoms. The scope of diagnostic measures is selected individually — depending on complaints, the clinical picture, and the results of the initial examination.

The doctor may prescribe:

Laboratory Urine and Blood Tests

A general urinalysis, Nechiporenko test, bacteriological examination, as well as blood tests help identify signs of inflammation, infectious processes, and impaired kidney function.

Ultrasound Examination (US)

Allows assessment of the condition of the kidneys, bladder, and ureters, and detection of inflammation, stones, neoplasms, or impaired urine outflow.

Endoscopic Methods

Cystoscopy makes it possible to examine the bladder mucosa from the inside and identify chronic inflammatory changes, neoplasms, or other pathologies.

Radiological Examinations

Used to assess urinary tract patency and detect stones or structural changes.

Computed Tomography

Prescribed to clarify the diagnosis, detail structural changes, or when complicated forms of disease are suspected, including the development of neoplasms.

A comprehensive diagnostic approach allows not only accurate identification of the cause of symptoms but also prevention of incorrect treatment. Based on examination results, the doctor develops an individual therapy plan aimed at eliminating the disease and preventing recurrences.

Treatment Methods in Female Urology

Treatment tactics in female urology are selected individually. The doctor takes into account the form and stage of the disease, the severity of symptoms, and the presence of comorbid conditions.

Depending on the clinical situation, the following treatment methods may be used:

  • Medication therapy. Prescribed for inflammatory, infectious, and functional disorders and may include antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, hormonal, and other medications according to the diagnosis.
  • Physiotherapy procedures. Used as an adjunct to primary treatment to reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, decrease pain, and accelerate recovery.
  • Minimally invasive methods. These include endoscopic procedures performed without incisions, with access through the urethra. They are used for functional urination disorders, certain forms of urinary incontinence, and other conditions that do not require open surgery. Such procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis, are well tolerated, and do not require long recovery.
  • Surgical treatment. Applied when medication or minimally invasive treatment is insufficiently effective, as well as in complex diseases of the urinary system. Surgical intervention is performed using modern sparing techniques that minimize tissue trauma and shorten the recovery period.

The treatment plan may be adjusted during follow-up depending on the body’s response to therapy and the dynamics of symptoms.

How to Prepare for a Urologist Appointment for Women

Special preparation is usually not required; however, following several recommendations helps make the visit as effective as possible.

Before the appointment, it is advisable to:

  • perform standard hygiene procedures without using aggressive products;
  • if possible, prepare the results of previous examinations, tests, or extracts from medical records;
  • formulate complaints in advance and pay attention to the characteristics of symptoms (when they appeared, what increases or reduces discomfort).

Following these simple recommendations helps the doctor obtain complete information during the first consultation and, if necessary, immediately determine the further examination plan.

How a Female Urologist Appointment Proceeds

The clinic is staffed by a urologist for girls and women who has experience working with the specifics of the female genitourinary system and delicate urological problems that can arise at different ages.

A female urologist appointment begins with a detailed conversation during which the doctor carefully listens to the patient’s complaints, уточняет the nature of symptoms, their duration, and the conditions under which they appear. Information is also collected about past illnesses, chronic conditions, previous treatment, and examination results, if any were conducted earlier.

After that, a urological examination of women is usually performed. It allows assessment of the general condition and identification of possible external signs of urological disorders.

After the examination, the doctor can form a preliminary diagnosis. Urological diseases usually require accurate diagnosis, so laboratory tests and instrumental examinations may be prescribed. After receiving the results, the doctor establishes an accurate diagnosis and offers an individual treatment plan or further monitoring.
