Shoulder MRI

Pain in the shoulder, discomfort during movements, or limitation of mobility may occur for various reasons — from overstrain to injuries or inflammatory processes. It is not always possible to determine the source of the problem using standard examination methods, especially if the changes concern soft tissues.

In such cases, the doctor may prescribe magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder joint — a diagnostic method that makes it possible to thoroughly assess the condition of tendons, ligaments, cartilage, the joint capsule, and bone structures. The study helps to detect pathological changes at early stages and obtain complete information for further treatment planning.

At the medical center «Oxford Medical», the examination is performed on a modern GE SIGNA Champion tomograph with AI Recon DL artificial intelligence technology, which increases image clarity. This allows obtaining the most informative results of the study.

You can schedule an examination at a time convenient for you by phone or through the feedback form.

What MRI of the shoulder joint shows

MRI of the shoulder joint allows a detailed assessment of bone structures and soft tissues, which are often the cause of pain and limitation of movements. Thanks to layered images, the doctor receives complete information about the condition of the joint and adjacent tissues.

During the examination, it is possible to assess:

  • the tendons of the rotator cuff — to detect inflammation, partial or complete tears;
  • the ligamentous apparatus — to determine its integrity and the state of joint stabilization;
  • the articular cartilage — to assess its condition, the presence of thinning or damage;
  • the joint capsule and the synovial membrane;
  • the presence of fluid in the joint or signs of inflammation;
  • the muscles around the shoulder — their structure and possible changes;
  • bone structures — in particular bone marrow edema, microdamage or degenerative changes;
  • neoplasms and other pathological changes.

MRI helps not only to detect pathological changes, but also to assess their nature and degree of severity. This is important for establishing an accurate diagnosis and choosing the optimal treatment strategy.

MRI of the shoulder joint:
indications for diagnostic examination

MRI of the shoulder joint is prescribed when it is necessary to determine the cause of pain,
limitation of movements, or other symptoms associated with impaired shoulder function. The
examination may be recommended already when complaints appear or used to clarify changes
and monitor the condition during treatment.

MRI may be recommended in the case of:

pain in the shoulder that does not go away or intensifies during movements or exertion;

limitation of mobility, stiffness, or impairment of joint function;

injuries — falls, blows, sudden movements, suspected damage to tendons, ligaments, or muscles;

suspected tear of the rotator cuff of the shoulder or other soft tissue injuries;

a feeling of joint instability, weakness, clicking, or “blocking” during movements;

signs of an inflammatory process (swelling, pain, local increase in temperature);

suspected degenerative or inflammatory diseases (arthrosis, arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis);

suspicion of neoplasms, as well as preparation for surgery or monitoring after treatment.

List of diseases

Pain in the shoulder area is not always associated with damage to the joint itself: similar symptoms may occur with injuries of adjacent structures, in particular with a clavicle fracture. In such cases, X-ray is primarily used to assess bone injuries, whereas MRI is used for a detailed assessment of soft tissues and associated changes.

Main contraindications

MRI of the shoulder joint is a safe diagnostic method, however, in some cases its performance is not recommended.

The contraindications include:

  • the presence of a pacemaker or other electronic implants incompatible with the magnetic field;
  • metal structures or foreign bodies in the body that may interact with the magnetic field (some implants, vascular clips, metal fragments);
  • pregnancy, especially in the first trimester — the decision regarding the examination is made individually;
  • pronounced claustrophobia, which may complicate the performance of the examination;
  • the presence of implants or prostheses — requires prior clarification of their compatibility with MRI;
  • a history of allergic reactions to contrast agents (in the case of planning a study with contrast);
  • pronounced impairment of kidney function (when contrast enhancement is used).

In each case, the possibility of performing MRI is determined individually, taking into account the patient's condition and the specifics of the examination.

Preparation rules

Special preparation for MRI of the shoulder joint is usually not required. The examination can be undergone without restrictions in diet and usual routine.

Before the procedure, it is necessary to:

  • choose comfortable clothing without metal elements (zippers, buttons, decorative inserts);
  • remove jewelry, a watch, glasses, and other accessories with metal details;
  • inform the doctor about the presence of implants, prostheses, or metal structures in the body.

If MRI with contrast enhancement is planned, as prescribed by the doctor, it is necessary to undergo a blood test in advance to assess kidney function (creatinine level or calculation of the glomerular filtration rate), and also not eat for 4–6 hours before the examination. This is necessary for the safe administration of the contrast agent and the performance of the study.

How MRI of the shoulder joint is performed

Before the examination begins, the patient is positioned on the movable table of the tomograph. The arm is fixed in a comfortable position to ensure immobility during scanning and obtain clear images.

After preparation, the table smoothly moves inside the tomograph, and the examination begins. The device performs a series of layered images of the shoulder joint and surrounding tissues.

The procedure is painless. During the operation of the tomograph, rhythmic sounds may be heard — this is a normal part of the process. It is important to remain still throughout the entire examination.

The duration of MRI usually is 20–30 minutes. If the study is performed with contrast enhancement, the procedure may take longer.

The obtained images are analyzed by a radiologist, after which the patient is given the results of the study.

How much MRI of the shoulder joint costs in Kyiv at the «Oxford Medical» clinic

The price for shoulder MRI depends on the need to use a contrast agent. A standard examination has a lower cost. A study with contrast enhancement is more extensive and involves the administration of a contrast agent and the performance of an additional series of images, therefore its cost may be higher.

How long does an MRI of the shoulder joint take?

MRI of the shoulder joint usually takes 20–30 minutes. If the study is performed with contrast enhancement, the time may increase to 30–40 minutes. During the procedure, it is important to remain still in order to obtain clear images.

What is better: ultrasound or MRI of the shoulder joint?

Ultrasound and MRI are different methods that are used depending on the clinical situation. Ultrasound makes it possible to assess the tendons, muscles, and the presence of fluid in the joint and is often used as a primary examination. MRI of the shoulder joint provides more detailed information about all structures of the joint, in particular deep tissues. In the case of injuries or suspected fractures, CT of the shoulder joint may be prescribed to assess the bones, and MRI — to clarify the condition of the soft tissues.
