A gnathological splint is an individual orthopaedic appliance made of medical polymer, which is fixed on the teeth, provides a controlled jaw position and promotes restoration of the physiological function of the temporomandibular joints.
Unlike sports or standard night guards, a splint for the joint is created based on precise digital data, taking into account the patient’s anatomical features and analysis of muscle function; its task is not only to protect the enamel but also to restore the optimal position of the lower jaw, distribute the load and stabilise TMJ movements.
The decision on the need to use a gnathological splint is based on diagnostic results and assessment
of the temporomandibular joint function. If pronounced disorders are detected, the doctor may recommend an individual joint splint for the jaw, which provides a controlled position of the lower jaw and helps to offload the joint structures.
Indications for the use of a gnathological splint may include:
pain or a feeling of discomfort in the joint area;

The duration of wearing depends on the diagnosis, the condition of the temporomandibular joints and the muscles’ response to treatment. In most cases, the splint is worn for several weeks or months, mainly at night or partly during the day. At follow-up visits, the doctor monitors the dynamics and, if necessary, adjusts the wearing regimen.
The splint must be rinsed after each use and cleaned with a soft brush and a special product or neutral antibacterial soap. It is not recommended to use hot water or abrasives, as they may deform the material. It is also important to store the splint in a dry case, protecting it from damage and bacteria.
