Crown application

A crown is a prosthesis that is placed on the upper part of a partially destroyed tooth. It restores its aesthetic appearance and full functionality. Modern crowns are made of high-strength materials that are matched to the color of the enamel of other teeth. Thanks to this, the structure does not stand out from the outside. In addition, crowns allow for prosthetics of a lost tooth - for this, bridge prostheses are used.

The crowns are divided into several types:

• porcelain fused to metal;
• metal;
• nonmetal.

The placement of metal crowns is foreign to modern dentistry, because they restore just the function, not an aesthetics. Such method of denture placement is much less used in dental clinics.

The porcelain fused to metal crown is composed of the metal cap with applied layers of porcelain. Nonmetal crown does not contain metal element and is divided into:

• zirconia;
• porcelain.

The high aesthetics is the advantage of nonmetal crown over porcelain fused to metal one. It 100% externally repeats the natural color and light-reflecting properties of a live tooth. In its turn, the porcelain fused to metal crown does not transmit light and slightly stands out against natural teeth. It is usually placed on the masticatory teeth. 

The crown placement process in Oxford Medical clinic has several stages:

• preparation of a tooth;
• taking casts (3-5 days);
• placement of temporary crown;
• placement of ready crown;

To present the process more clearly, we will provide a simple and illustrative example. We need to place 4 crowns in the front area of upper jaw. If the teeth were previously treated, then the quality of dental filling is studied with CT scan, thus excluding or confirming the filling. If after diagnosing the teeth do not require retreatment, then you have to undergo three stages of crown fabrication.

The cast is taken for a wax model of teeth, with the help of which temporary crowns will be made. Then, during the second stage, the teeth are filed down and temporary crowns are fixed. The third stage is the fabrication of crowns in dental laboratory. Its duration depends on the complexity of the work and the number of required crowns, but usually it is not less 10-14 days. When the crowns are ready, they are fixed, and, if necessary, fitted on the occlusion.
