Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating, or ligature-free braces, are an orthodontic system in which the archwire is secured with small clips located on each bracket. They appear more compact and aesthetic than traditional ones and also make the treatment process more comfortable and slightly faster.

The main difference between ligature-free and traditional braces lies in the method of securing the archwire. In the former, it is held by small clips built into the brackets, while in the latter – by ligatures, that is, small elastic bands or metal ties.

Ligatures visually enlarge the braces, but their main property is different. They completely immobilize the archwire, so when the teeth move, it stays in the same position. As a result, the patient needs to visit the dentist for adjustments once or twice a month. During the appointment, the doctor tightens the archwire and replaces the ligatures, after which the patient feels increased pressure on the teeth for several days.

When using self-ligating braces, the archwire retains slight mobility, which allows for less frequent visits to the doctor and makes bite correction more comfortable. During tooth movement, the pressure from the archwire is lower, which helps avoid pain and discomfort.

The advantages of self-ligating braces include:

• absence of rubber or metal ligatures;
• mobility of the archwire during tooth movement;
• aesthetic appearance;
• more comfortable treatment;
• reduction of wearing time by several months;
• less frequent visits to the dentist;
• easy daily care.

Ligature-free braces have many more advantages than disadvantages, but sometimes both patients and dentists prefer classic systems.

The main disadvantages of self-ligating braces are considered to be:

• higher price, justified by the complex manufacturing process based on an individual model;
• bracket size larger by 1 mm compared to ligature systems;
• specific correction techniques requiring special knowledge and skills from the dentist.

Before installing braces, proper preparation is required. First, diagnostics are performed: examination, X-ray, CT scan, or orthopantomogram. These studies help determine the position of all teeth, including those that have not yet erupted, and plan orthodontic treatment. In addition, if cavities or gum inflammation are present, appropriate treatment is carried out.

After that, the dentist takes dental impressions and sends them to the laboratory, where braces are made based on an individual model. This process takes 1–2 weeks.

The installation of braces proceeds as follows:

1. The teeth are cleaned and prepared for bracket fixation.
2. A dental adhesive is applied, and all brackets are attached one by one.
3. Special rings are placed on the last teeth in the row to ensure secure fixation of the entire structure.
4. The adhesive is cured using a UV lamp, and the brackets are fixed in place.
5. Finally, the archwire is installed and the slots are closed.

Caring for ligature-free braces is easier than for traditional ones. Due to the absence of elastic bands, less plaque and food residue accumulate on them. However, thorough hygiene is still essential.

After installation, patients are advised to purchase special toothbrushes and interdental brushes to clean the spaces between the brackets and under the archwire. They should be used every time the teeth are brushed – at least twice a day. It is also recommended to use mouthwash after every meal.

To monitor treatment progress and adjust the braces, it is necessary to visit the dentist regularly. The frequency of visits depends on individual factors, but usually, they are less frequent than with ligature systems – once every 1–2 months.
