Cystotomy – is a surgical procedure during which the walls of the cyst are opened, its contents are removed and the capsule is partially removed. The method is used in cases where complete excision of the walls may damage anatomical structures.
The procedure includes several stages:
-
Local anesthesia to ensure painlessness.
-
Formation of access to the cyst through the gums and bone tissue.
-
Removal of the contents of the cyst, preservation of part of the capsule.
-
Wound treatment with antiseptics.
-
Application of a dressing or installation of drainage.
An alternative is cystectomy in dentistry – complete removal of the cyst along with the affected tooth root. The method is used if only one root of a multi-rooted tooth is affected — in this case the tooth can be saved.
In some cases, the tooth itself has to be removed if it cannot be saved. This decision is made only when other options are ineffective.
