Thrombosed hemorrhoids: treatment in Kyiv | Oxford Medical

Treatment of thrombosis of hemorrhoids

Thrombosis of a hemorrhoidal node is a complication of hemorrhoids in which a blood clot forms inside the node. This condition is accompanied by sharp pain, swelling, and a feeling of pressure or a lump in the area of the anus.

This condition develops due to impaired blood circulation in the hemorrhoidal plexuses, when the outflow of venous blood becomes difficult and a thrombus forms. In such cases, inflammation and swelling of the tissues can quickly increase, therefore if such symptoms appear it is advisable to consult a proctologist as soon as possible.

At the «Oxford Medical» medical center in Kyiv, patients can undergo examinations and receive effective medical care using modern minimally invasive techniques. Timely consultation with a doctor helps reduce pain, eliminate inflammation, and prevent the development of complications.

Types of hemorrhoidal thrombosis

This condition can occur in different areas of the venous plexus of the rectum. In clinical practice, it is classified depending on the location of the affected formations and the characteristics of the course of the disease.

Thrombosis of external hemorrhoids

In this case, a blood clot forms in a formation located under the skin near the anus. Thrombosis of an external hemorrhoid manifests as a dense painful formation in the anal area. The skin above it may be tense, swollen, or bluish. The pain usually increases during sitting, walking, or defecation.

Thrombosis of internal hemorrhoids

A clot forms in the nodes located inside the anal canal. In the early stages, a person may feel pressure or discomfort in the rectum. If such a formation increases in size or protrudes outward, pain, swelling, and possible bloody discharge may appear.

Thrombosis in combined hemorrhoids

In some cases, both internal and external nodes are involved in the pathological process at the same time. This condition may be accompanied by more pronounced inflammation, significant swelling of tissues, and intense pain. The course of the disease in such cases is often more complicated and requires more active therapy.

In addition to localization, this condition is also distinguished by its course. Most often it has an acute nature, when symptoms appear suddenly and are accompanied by pronounced pain and swelling of the tissues. In such a situation, the inflammatory process may rapidly intensify, so it is important to conduct an examination in time and select the appropriate therapy.

Causes of hemorrhoidal thrombosis

The main cause of this condition is impaired blood circulation in the hemorrhoidal plexuses. When the outflow of venous blood becomes difficult, it may stagnate in the vessels. As a result, a blood clot forms that blocks the vessel lumen and causes inflammation and swelling of the tissues.

This condition may occur under the influence of various factors that increase pressure in the pelvic veins or worsen venous outflow.

The most common causes include:

  • prolonged sitting or a sedentary lifestyle;
  • lifting heavy objects and excessive physical exertion;
  • constipation and strong straining during bowel movements;
  • pregnancy and childbirth;
  • prolonged stay in one position;
  • excessive consumption of spicy food or alcohol;
  • impaired blood circulation in the pelvic area.

This condition may also occur during exacerbation of hemorrhoids, when the formations enlarge and blood circulation in them worsens.

Symptoms of hemorrhoidal thrombosis

Thrombosis of a hemorrhoidal node usually appears suddenly. Pain may
occur within a short period of time and quickly intensify.

The most common symptoms:

sharp or throbbing pain in the anal area;

the appearance of a dense painful formation near the anus;

swelling and redness of the tissues in the anal area;

increased pain during sitting, walking, or defecation.

List of diseases

In some cases, acute thrombosis of an external hemorrhoid develops, which is accompanied by severe pain and pronounced inflammation of the tissues. In such a situation, it is advisable to seek medical help as soon as possible.

Disease progression

After a thrombus forms, the affected area enlarges, becomes dense, and feels tense. An inflammatory reaction develops in the surrounding tissues, which leads to swelling and an increase in pain.

In the first days after the thrombus appears, the symptoms are usually the most pronounced. Over time, the pain may sometimes decrease slightly, however this does not mean that the problem has disappeared. The clot remains in the tissues, and the inflammatory process may continue.

Without medical care, the condition may sometimes worsen: the swelling increases, the lump becomes more tense, and discomfort during everyday activity intensifies. That is why when characteristic symptoms appear it is important to consult a proctologist for examination and selection of appropriate therapy.

Acute hemorrhoidal thrombosis

Acute thrombosis is one of the most painful forms of proctological diseases. It is accompanied by significant tissue swelling and pronounced inflammation in the affected area.

A dense painful formation appears in the area of the anus, and the skin over it may acquire a bluish or dark red shade. The pain can sometimes be so intense that it makes sitting, walking, or even normal movements difficult.

If hemorrhoidal thrombosis occurs, treatment should preferably be started as soon as possible — within the first few days after symptoms appear. At an early stage, therapy allows pain, swelling, and inflammation to be reduced more quickly.

Depending on the condition of the affected area, the doctor may recommend medication therapy or minimally invasive surgical intervention. If conservative treatment does not provide sufficient effect, in some cases surgical removal of the thrombosed hemorrhoidal node may be recommended.

Why hemorrhoidal thrombosis is dangerous

Hemorrhoidal thrombosis is an acute proctological condition that requires timely medical care. Without treatment, the inflammatory process in the affected area may progress, leading to increased pain, significant swelling, and impaired blood circulation in the tissues.

Possible complications include:

  • pronounced inflammation and spreading swelling to surrounding tissues;
  • impaired blood supply to the affected area with the development of necrosis (tissue death);
  • formation of ulcers on the surface;
  • bleeding from the damaged mucous membrane;
  • attachment of a bacterial infection and development of purulent inflammation.

In some cases, hemorrhoids may significantly enlarge, making sitting, walking, and bowel movements difficult. Severe pain and inflammation can significantly reduce the patient’s quality of life.

Treatment of hemorrhoidal thrombosis in Kyiv at the «Oxford Medical» clinic

The treatment strategy for hemorrhoidal thrombosis depends on the size of the thrombus, the severity of inflammation, the duration of symptoms, and the general condition of the patient. After examination, the proctologist evaluates the location of the lesion, the degree of tissue swelling, and the presence of possible complications, after which the optimal treatment method is selected.

At the «Oxford Medical» clinic in Kyiv, modern therapeutic approaches are used, aimed at rapidly reducing pain, eliminating inflammation, and restoring normal blood circulation in the rectal area.

Conservative treatment

In the early stages or with moderately expressed symptoms, medication therapy may be used.

Conservative treatment may include:

  • use of topical medications (rectal suppositories, ointments, or gels);
  • venotonic agents to improve the condition of venous vessels;
  • anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications;
  • dietary recommendations to prevent constipation and normalize bowel function.

The doctor may also provide recommendations regarding physical activity, diet, and constipation prevention. This helps normalize bowel function and reduce the load on the pelvic veins.

Surgical treatment of thrombosis

If thrombosis is accompanied by severe pain, significant swelling, and tension in the affected area, surgical treatment may be performed. One of the methods is thrombectomy — removal of the thrombus.

During the procedure, the doctor makes a small incision in the affected area and removes the blood clot. This allows the internal pressure to be quickly reduced, pain to be relieved, and tissue swelling to decrease. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and usually takes little time.

In some cases, when thrombosis of an external hemorrhoidal node occurs, an operation may be performed to remove the thrombus. The intervention method is determined individually after examination by a proctologist.

Treatment of hemorrhoids after elimination of thrombosis

After the acute condition has been resolved, the doctor may recommend treatment of hemorrhoids, since enlarged nodes may contribute to the repeated formation of thrombi.

For this purpose, modern minimally invasive methods are used:

  • ligation of hemorrhoidal nodes with latex rings;
  • infrared photocoagulation;
  • laser treatment of hemorrhoidal nodes.

The treatment method is selected individually taking into account the stage of hemorrhoids, the location of the formations, and the general condition of the patient. Timely consultation with a proctologist allows thrombosis to be eliminated, reduces the risk of recurrent exacerbations, and restores comfort in everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does hemorrhoidal thrombosis last?

The most intense pain in hemorrhoidal thrombosis usually occurs during the first 2–3 days after the clot forms. Later, the symptoms may sometimes partially decrease, but this does not mean that the problem has disappeared, since the clot remains in the node. Without treatment, the inflammatory process may progress, which increases the risk of complications. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a proctologist in the first days after the symptoms appear in order to remove the clot more quickly and relieve the condition.

What diet is recommended for hemorrhoidal thrombosis?

The diet should be aimed at normalizing bowel function and preventing constipation. It is recommended to consume more fiber-rich foods: vegetables, fruits, whole-grain cereals, and bran. It is important to drink enough water. It is advisable to limit spicy foods, alcohol, fatty and very salty dishes, which may increase irritation and impair blood circulation in the pelvic area.
