Metal braces - this is a classic orthodontic system that has been used to correct the bite for over 130 years. Despite the emergence of more modern models made of ceramics and artificial sapphire, they remain the most popular. Metal braces are highly effective, durable and affordable.

They come in several types:

1. Vestibular – these are classic braces that are attached to the outside of the teeth.

In addition, systems may differ in the method of attaching the arch, which connects all the brackets and, due to pressure on the teeth, corrects their position. Currently used:

1. Ligature braces – provide for fixing the arch with the help of small rubber bands (ligatures) that are worn on each bracket. They are changed at each visit to the dentist.

2. Ligature-free, or self-ligating braces – have miniature locks for fastening the archwire on each bracket, which allows you to do without ligatures. Thanks to this, they look more compact and neat, and also require fewer visits to the doctor for correction. 

The main advantages of metal braces are:

• high efficiency – suitable for correcting even severe malocclusions and dentition;

• minimum wearing time – allow teeth to be aligned faster than other orthodontic systems;

• strength of elements – are characterized by reliable fixation and resistance to heavy loads when biting and chewing food;

• ease of care – are easy to clean and do not require changes in eating habits;

• affordable cost – is a budget option for correcting the bite.

Metal braces are rightfully considered the most effective, easiest to install and use, and also affordable. Given this, many patients choose them. At the same time, aesthetics do not have to be sacrificed either. You can regularly put colored ligatures on the braces, giving your smile a unique individuality.

The disadvantages of metal braces can only be highlighted in comparison with more expensive ceramic and sapphire systems. The latter look more attractive and less noticeable. They can practically merge with the color of the teeth or give them additional shine.

Metal braces are more noticeable. Due to their silver color, they stand out against the background of the teeth. In addition, they can cause discomfort and irritation of the skin of the lips, which in most patients pass within a few days.

In order for orthodontic treatment to be as effective as possible, you need to prepare for it properly. First of all, a computer diagnosis is performed - most often an orthopantomogram is performed. This is an X-ray of one or two jaws, which allows you to assess the structure of the bones, as well as the location and condition of all teeth, including those that have not yet erupted. Based on the results of the study, the orthodontist determines which braces are best to put on.

After this, professional teeth cleaning is performed to remove hard plaque and tartar, as well as caries treatment and fillings if necessary. It is important that braces are placed on completely healthy teeth, as they complicate hygiene, which, if there is an infection in the oral cavity, can lead to greater damage to the teeth.

The duration of treatment is determined individually and depends on the complexity and volume of the necessary correction. The average term is 1.5-2 years. This is followed by a retention period, when the result is fixed with the help of orthodontic plates or caps (most often they are worn only at night). It can last from one to three years.
