Since gardnerella vaginalis in men often does not have specific symptoms, it is impossible to establish a diagnosis based only on complaints. Therefore, laboratory examination plays a key role. At the appointment, the doctor clarifies the symptoms, assesses possible risk factors, and determines which tests are advisable specifically in your case.
To confirm the presence of the infection, the following may be prescribed:
- PCR analysis for accurate identification of the causative agent;
- collection of material from the urethra for examination;
- a general urine test to assess the condition of the genitourinary system;
- testing for concomitant infections.
During the laboratory examination, clue cells are sometimes detected, which indicates a change in the microflora and helps to clarify the diagnosis.
Treatment of gardnerella in men depends not only on the test results, but also on the clinical picture. If bacteria are detected, but there are no symptoms of the disease, the doctor assesses the appropriateness of therapy individually. At the same time, in the presence of an inflammatory process, treatment is mandatory.
The basis of therapy consists of:
- antibacterial drugs aimed at eliminating the causative agent;
- anti-inflammatory agents to reduce discomfort and the inflammatory process;
- drugs for restoring the microflora and normalizing the local environment (when indicated).
Treatment of gardnerellosis in men requires full compliance with the doctor’s prescriptions. Independent discontinuation of therapy or selection of drugs without consultation may lead to the fact that the infection will remain and manifest itself again after some time.
Particular attention is paid to the prevention of reinfection. For this, examination and, if necessary, treatment of the sexual partner are recommended, as well as temporary restriction of sexual contacts.
After completion of the course of treatment, it is advisable to take the tests again. This makes it possible to make sure that the infection has been eliminated, even if the symptoms no longer bother you.
