Checking the patency of the fallopian tubes

When preparing for the SHSG procedure, the following recommendations are given:

• use barrier contraception from the beginning of the menstrual cycle to prevent pregnancy;

• shave the genital area the day before;

• empty the bowel with an enema on the day of the test.

A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is also mandatory before the procedure. This may include general urine and blood tests, vaginal smear tests, a Pap test, and screening for hidden infections.

The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia. A special syringe is used to introduce contrast material into the uterine cavity. Then, using an ultrasound machine, the uterus and fallopian tubes are examined. If fluid is visible near the ovaries on ultrasound, it means the fallopian tubes are patent.
