Gallstone disease is a disease characterized by the formation of stones (concretions) in the gallbladder or bileduct. Formations can be both small and large, occupying the entire cavity of the gallbladder.
The formation of concretions in the gallbladder is often asymptomatic and diagnosed casually.
But in some cases concretions may be indicated by the following signs:
Yellowness of the sclera of the eyes, mucous membranes, skin
Biliary colic
Nausea
Vomiting
Bitter taste in mouth
Diarrhea
The following factors can also contribute to the development of gallstone disease:
Sometimes small concretions leave the gallbladder, enter the intestine through the biliary duct and are excreted from the body with feces. But if the concretion gets stuck in the bileduct, the outflow of bile is disrupted and choledocholithiasis develops. In it’s turn this process threatens the development of obstructive yellow plague, biliary pancreatitis and other complications.
Acute calculous cholecystitis often develops when concretions enter the bileduct and prevent the outflow of bile. Mechanical blockage of the biliary duct leads to stagnation of bile in the gallbladder and, as a result, the development of inflammatory processes there. In the absence of adequate treatment this leads to necrosis of the gallbladder tissues and the development of another terrible complication of gallstone disease – biliary fistulas.
There are various methods of treatment of gallstone disease: conservative therapy, lithotripsy, radical surgical methods - surgical removal of gallbladder stones and cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder). Cholecystectomy is usually prescribed when non-invasive treatments for gallstone disease are ineffective.
Ultrasound and MRI are usually performed for diagnosing gallstone disease. They help to determine the presence of concretions in the gallbladder, its size, the state of its walls and lumen, and the presence of other complications. At the same time blood, urine and other laboratory tests are conducted to clarify the clinical picture and detect possible contraindications to surgery.
The operation can be performed in 2 ways - open and laparoscopic method (without incisions, through punctures in the anterior abdominal wall). There are practically no traces on the skin, and the recovery period after such an operation is minimal. The final decision in choosing the optimal treatment method is made by the doctor, who takes into account all the indications.
