Laser treatment of Peyronie's disease
Laser treatment of Peyronie's disease
Peyronie's disease (fibroplastic penile induration) is a disease that develops as a result of the formation of a fibrous plaque and subsequent curvature of the penis.

Causes and symptoms of Peyronie's disease
Penis consists of hollow formations called the cavernous body. During erection the cavernous body, consisting of many cells, is supported by blood pressure, due to which, in fact, the erection occurs.
In case of Peyronie's disease the protein membrane of the cavernous body can harden. It results in formation of fibrous plaques which are the cause of penis curvature during erection. In addition, they can prevent the increase of the penis to the necessary size and its hardening.
The authoritative cause of the development of fibrous plaques has not been determined, but doctors suggest that the role of provoking factors may play constant microtrauma of the penis. Autoimmune factors of the disease are not excluded.
In addition to the visible curvature (in complicated cases the angle of curvature can reach 90 degrees, making sexual intercourse impossible), at the advanced stages of the disease, patients complain of such symptoms:
-
pain feelings during erection;
-
erectile dysfunction.
Diagnosis and treatment of Peyronie’s disease
The diagnosis is based on the examination of the penis by a urologist-andrologist (artificial erection can be aroused for this purpose) and ultrasound of the vessels of the penis. If erectile dysfunction takes place, other possible causes of this problem have to be excluded.
The treatment can be conservative or surgical. The second option is used more often due to the fact that the patients start seeking medical advice at the stage of advanced disease. The conservative treatment supposes taking hormonal and steroid drugs, vitamins and low-energy shockwave therapy.
Surgical treatment involves the removal or dissection of fibrous plaques. An alternative approach is to excise the longer side of the cavernous body, whereby the penis is also aligned. If Peyronie's disease is accompanied by erectile dysfunction, penile prosthesis is possible. The method of treatment is determined by the attending surgeon after studying the patient's health condition.
Laser treatment in the "Oxford Medical" clinic
Surgery for Peyronie's disease in the "Oxford Medical" clinic is performed with the help of a surgical laser. Due to this, less blood loss occurs during the operation, the carrying of infection is excluded, and the patient recovers faster.
As a result of the operation, complications in the form of erectile dysfunction may develop. It should be noted that patients who apply a doctor already have a disease in an advanced form or complicated by erectile dysfunction, which makes sexual intercourses impossible. Therefore, the risk of complications is not a reason to refuse treatment.
The extensive experience of urologic surgeons of the "Oxford Medical" clinic, combined with the use of modern laser equipment, allows to minimize the likelihood of development of complications.
