Arthroscopy of the knee joint

Knee arthroscopy in Kyiv

A loyalty program is available for surgical interventions in the hospital, which makes treatment even more affordable.

Knee arthroscopy - this is a modern minimally invasive operation that is performed for the purpose of treatment, as well as to clarify the diagnosis. It is accompanied by minimal damage to healthy tissues, which allows you to shorten the rehabilitation period compared to classic arthrotomy. Hospitalization is only 1-3 days, and recovery from work takes about 2-4 weeks.

To provide access to the knee, several punctures are made on the skin, up to 5 mm in diameter. Through them, an arthroscope equipped with a miniature video camera and surgical instruments are inserted into the joint. The image from the video camera is transmitted to a monitor with multiple magnification, allowing the surgeon to carefully examine the tissues and perform the necessary manipulations with jeweler's precision.

At «Oxford Medical» arthroscopy is performed on new, expert-class equipment. Thanks to this, as well as the surgeons' many years of experience, each patient can be confident in the safety and effectiveness of such treatment.

Advantages of arthroscopy compared to open surgery

Arthroscopy – is the optimal method of treating the knee joint in case of injury or serious illness requiring surgical intervention. Today, it allows almost completely replacing classical arthrotomy with open access. After minimally invasive surgery, the patient can walk and lean on the knee for 1-3 days, and work capacity is restored, as a rule, within 2-4 weeks. Open surgery is more traumatic. Because of this, longer hospitalization and rehabilitation for 1.5-2 months is necessary.

The advantages of arthroscopic surgery are:

  • low trauma;

  • targeted action on damaged tissues;

  • minimum risk of complications;

  • the ability to get up and walk on the 1st-3rd day;

  • short and easy rehabilitation period.

Indications for knee arthroscopy

Most often, arthroscopy is performed for therapeutic purposes. For diagnostics
it is used when other research methods do not allow to make an accurate
diagnosis and determine the degree of damage to the knee joint. At the same time, during
knee surgery, the surgeon can immediately perform therapeutic manipulations.

Indications for knee arthroscopy are:

fractures in the knee joint area

presence of bone fragments, fluid in the knee

dislocation, patellar instability

Meniscus injury, tear or cyst

cruciate ligament rupture

synovial membrane damage

osteochondral exostoses (growths on the knee)

arthritis, arthrosis, osteoarthritis, hemarthrosis

damage and inflammation of adipose tissue (Hoff's disease)

insufficient informativeness of other diagnostic methods

List of diseases

Preparing for arthroscopy

Before meniscus arthroscopy a thorough diagnosis is performed. To assess the condition of the knee joint, joint X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound are performed.  The patient is also prescribed laboratory tests, an ECG, and other examinations if necessary.

Immediately before the operation, the patient is recommended to abstain from food (6-12 hours) and water, as well as shave the hair in the knee area. If you are taking medications, you should discuss with your doctor the possibility of taking them the day before and on the day of arthroscopy.

How is knee arthroscopy performed?

Arthroscopy is performed under general endotracheal anesthesia.

After anesthesia, the surgeon makes one small puncture in the knee joint area, through which he inserts the arthroscope - an elastic tube with a diameter of 4-5 mm, equipped with an optical system. The image from the video camera is transmitted to the monitor screen with a magnification of 40-60 times. Slowly moving the arthroscope, the surgeon carefully examines the joint tissues and determines the type and extent of damage.

After this, the surgeon can make 1 or 2 more punctures to insert surgical instruments. With their help, he can clean the joint of fluid or pus, remove damaged tissues, restore the integrity of ligaments and tendons, fix the joint and perform other necessary manipulations.

An operation on the knee joint lasts an average of 30 to 60 minutes. After its completion, the doctor applies stitches and sterile bandages to the skin puncture sites.

Rehabilitation after knee arthroscopy

After arthroscopy, the patient spends 1 to 3 days in the hospital. During this time, it may be recommended to limit mobility and load on the knee joint, i.e. the patient cannot stand up and lean on the operated leg.

In the first days after the operation, swelling and moderate pain in the joint area may be observed. To eliminate symptoms and heal tissues, drug therapy is prescribed. Physiotherapy procedures, therapeutic exercises, and knee massage may also be prescribed to restore normal joint mobility.

On average, rehabilitation after minimally invasive surgery is 2-4 weeks. During this time, you should avoid heavy physical exertion and follow all medical prescriptions.

In most patients, knee joint recovery after arthroscopy is quick and easy, but much depends on the type and severity of the injury or disease.

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy - is a minimally invasive method of diagnosing and treating joints using an arthroscope - a thin optical instrument that is inserted through small punctures. The procedure allows you to assess the condition of cartilage, ligaments, menisci and perform surgical manipulations without a large incision, which shortens the recovery period.

How is knee arthroscopy performed?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery. It is performed without an incision. The image from the camera is transmitted to a monitor with a magnification of 40-60 times. Thanks to it, the surgeon can examine the tissues in detail and perform the necessary manipulations with maximum accuracy.

How long does rehabilitation last after knee arthroscopy?

The duration of rehabilitation after arthroscopy depends on the complexity of the injury or disease. Most often, the patient is allowed to walk, leaning on the operated leg, already on the 1st-3rd day.
