Percutaneous puncture of a renal cyst

Percutaneous puncture of a kidney cyst in Kyiv

A loyalty program is available for surgical interventions in the hospital, which makes treatment even more affordable.

Percutaneous puncture - this is a puncture of a kidney cyst with subsequent aspiration (extraction) of its contents. The procedure is performed under constant ultrasound control. It is minimally invasive, so local anesthesia is mainly used for anesthesia.

To prevent re-accumulation of exudate, patients are usually immediately given sclerosing therapy. After removing the contents of the cyst cavity, a sclerosing drug is injected, which promotes the adhesion of its walls and subsequent scarring of the tissues.

Although the procedure is quite simple and safe, it requires the highest skill of the surgeon and the availability of high-quality imaging equipment in the clinic.

At «Oxford Medical» Renal cyst puncture is performed on the basis of a modern high-tech surgical department equipped with new expert-class equipment. It allows you to diagnose cysts and other neoplasms from 1 mm in size and perform punctures, as well as minimally invasive urological operations with maximum accuracy.

Causes of kidney disease

In many people, kidney cysts are congenital, that is, they are formed during intrauterine development. In such cases, scientists believe that the key reason is genetic predisposition.

In adulthood, cysts develop most often in men and women over the age of 45. The exact causes of the disease are still being studied, but most experts agree that the risk of the disease is increased by heredity, parasitic infections of the genitourinary system, nephrolithiasis, kidney tuberculosis, glomerulonephritis, kidney injuries, frequent hypothermia, bad habits, etc.

When is percutaneous puncture of a kidney cyst prescribed?

A kidney cyst is a benign neoplasm that has a hollow structure and is filled with liquid or semi-liquid exudate. In many patients, cysts are congenital. They can remain unchanged for years, without disrupting the functioning of the kidneys and without showing any symptoms.

Cysts with a diameter of less than 5 cm, which do not increase, do not affect the blood supply to the kidney and the outflow of urine, as a rule, do not require treatment. Patients are prescribed dispensary observation - a visit to a urologist and an ultrasound scan of the kidneys 1-2 times a year.

Removal of the cyst by percutaneous puncture is performed only if the cyst is single-chamber, has a homogeneous structure and clear contours. In other cases, a minimally invasive operation is prescribed - resection of the kidney cyst.

In addition, a cyst puncture is performed for diagnostic purposes - taking the contents for cytological, bacteriological and biochemical analyses. Their results allow you to determine the exact nature of the neoplasm and choose the optimal treatment tactics.

Main indications for kidney cyst removal

Indications for kidney cyst removal are:

cyst size over 5 cm

cyst enlargement

impact on kidney function and related organs

pain syndrome

inflammation, suppuration of the cyst

risk of cyst rupture

suspicion of malignant neoplasm

List of diseases

How is percutaneous puncture of a kidney cyst performed?

Puncture – this is a minimally invasive procedure, so it is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation (medical sleep). Depending on the patient's condition, it can be performed on an outpatient basis or require hospitalization for several days.

Stages of performing a kidney cyst puncture:

  1. The patient is placed on a couch in a prone or side position.

  2. The surgeon treats the skin at the puncture site with antiseptic agents and provides anesthesia.

  3. Under constant ultrasound control, the kidney cyst is punctured and its contents are pumped out with a needle.

  4. Then, if necessary, a sclerosing drug is injected, which is also pumped out after some time.

  5. After the procedure is completed, a small sterile bandage is applied to the puncture site.

In cases where a decision has been made to puncture a large cyst with signs of infection and the development of a purulent process, it is possible to perform the procedure in several approaches. First, aspiration and sanitation of the cyst are performed, after which drainage is installed. It is left for 3-5 days, until the inflammatory process is eliminated. After this, sclerosing therapy is performed, which involves 3-4 injections of the drug.

Preparation for kidney cyst puncture and rehabilitation

Before the procedure, the patient undergoes an ultrasound examination of the kidneys and urine and blood tests. If a more accurate diagnosis is needed, a computed tomography scan may be prescribed. The results of the examination allow us to identify indications for cyst removal and determine which treatment option will be optimal - puncture or laparoscopic resection.

If the puncture is performed under local anesthesia, special preparation for the procedure is not required. If sedation is used, a diet may be recommended.

After a kidney puncture, the patient is recommended to:

Lie down for a few hours

Avoid heavy lifting and intense physical activity

Keep the bandage clean and dry.

Eat a balanced diet and drink enough fluids

After 1-2 weeks, undergo a control ultrasound.

Potential complications after cyst puncture

Complications after puncture occur in only a few percent of patients.

Potential risks of kidney cyst puncture include bleeding into the cyst cavity or paranephral tissue, damage to the structures of the kidney or adjacent organs, infection, and an allergic reaction to the sclerosant. When puncture is performed by an experienced specialist, such risks are minimized.

Also, to reduce the risk of complications, the patient is previously subjected to a comprehensive examination, which allows excluding the presence of contraindications.

In our clinic, kidney puncture is performed by urological surgeons with more than 20 years of experience. Thanks to this, as well as the use of expert-class equipment, each patient can be confident in the high efficiency and safety of the procedure.

The cost of kidney cyst puncture depends on several factors. First of all - the procedure is performed only for the purpose of diagnosis or treatment. In the second case, after the exudate is removed, sclerosing is performed, that is, a drug is injected into the cyst that promotes gluing its walls and subsequent scarring. Secondly, the cost of the procedure depends on the method of anesthesia - the use of local anesthesia or sedation.
