Laparoscopic excision of a kidney cyst

Laparoscopic excision of a kidney cyst in Kyiv

A loyalty program is available for surgical interventions in the hospital, which makes treatment even more affordable.

Laparoscopic excision - this is the safest and most effective method of removing a kidney cyst. The operation is minimally invasive, performed without long incisions. Instead, 3 punctures with a diameter of about 1 cm are made, through which a laparoscope equipped with an optical system and trocars (special surgical instruments) are inserted. Thanks to this technology, damage to healthy tissues is minimized, blood loss and the risk of complications are reduced, and the rehabilitation period is faster and easier than after open access operations.

At «Oxford Medical» laparoscopic excision of a kidney cyst is performed by urological surgeons with over 20 years of experience. The equipment installed in the surgery department allows us to perform urological operations of any complexity. The main principle of our clinic is to provide high-quality medical care using advanced technologies.

Causes of kidney cyst formation

The causes of cyst development are still being studied. Most experts note that genetic predisposition plays a leading role. In many patients, cysts are congenital, that is, they arise during intrauterine development.

In adulthood, the key role in the formation of kidney cysts is played by diseases such as parasitic infections, nephrolithiasis, renal tuberculosis, glomerulonephritis, and others. Also, risk factors are kidney injuries, frequent hypothermia, bad habits, etc. Acquired cysts are most often diagnosed in women and men over 45 years of age.

When should a kidney cyst be removed?

A kidney cyst is a benign neoplasm. In its structure, it resembles a capsule: it has a dense shell, and inside it is filled with liquid or semi-liquid contents.

Cysts can be of different sizes, have one or more chambers, be single or multiple, and be located in different parts of the organ. In some people, cysts are congenital, in others they develop throughout life.

The need to remove a kidney cyst depends on many factors. If the cyst has a small diameter (usually up to 5 cm), does not increase, does not affect the blood supply to the kidney and urine outflow, the patient may be recommended dispensary observation - a visit to a urologist and an ultrasound scan of the kidneys every 6-12 months.

Indications for cyst removal

In such cases, surgery is recommended to be performed as soon as possible
due to the high risk of complications:

large size of the cyst, squeezing the vessels of the kidney and ureter

rapid increase in cyst diameter

urinary incontinence

severe pain syndrome

cyst inflammation

cyst suppuration

high risk of cyst rupture

suspicion of malignant neoplasm

List of diseases

Preparing for surgery

Most often, the initial detection of a kidney cyst occurs during ultrasound. However, the study does not allow to accurately determine the nature of the disease, therefore, to clarify the diagnosis, additional examinations are prescribed: urine and blood tests, computed tomography, and others according to indications. According to the results of the diagnosis, the number and size of the cysts, the exact location in the organ, the effect on the blood supply to the kidney and its functions are determined. Taking into account the characteristics of the neoplasm, the surgeon chooses the method of surgical intervention.

The day before the cyst removal, the patient is prescribed preoperative tests and an ECG to exclude contraindications to surgery and anesthesia.

For 2-3 days, the patient is recommended to follow a low-fiber diet. The operation is performed on an empty stomach. The last meal is allowed no later than 8 hours, and water after 2-4. The surgeon will tell you more about preparing for the operation, taking into account individual characteristics.

How is laparoscopic excision of a kidney cyst performed?

Laparoscopic surgery is the most gentle surgical treatment option. Due to minimal damage to healthy tissues, most patients are discharged from the hospital on the 2nd-3rd day, and return to their usual lifestyle in a few weeks.

Laparoscopic excision of a kidney cyst is performed as follows:

  1. The patient is put under anesthesia.

  2. 3 punctures with a diameter of about 1 cm are made above the navel and along the mid-axillary line on the side of the affected organ.

  3. Then carbon dioxide is injected into the abdominal cavity. It lifts the abdominal wall, which provides the surgeon with a good view and creates space for manipulation.

  4. After that, a laparoscope equipped with an LED and a video camera is inserted through the punctures made, the image from which is transmitted to the monitor screen and magnified many times, and trocars – special surgical instruments.

  5. With their help, the surgeon makes an incision in the affected kidney and removes the cyst.

  6. After that, he conducts a thorough examination of the abdominal cavity, removes the instruments and applies stitches and sterile bandages to the puncture sites.

After the operation, the patient is removed from anesthesia and transferred to the intensive care unit for several hours to monitor his well-being.

Rehabilitation after kidney cyst removal

In most patients, rehabilitation after laparoscopic operations is much easier than after open operations. This also reduces the length of hospitalization - usually patients are discharged on the 3rd day. In more complex cases, they need to stay in the hospital for about a week.

To prevent complications and ensure successful recovery, patients are prescribed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs.

On the day of the operation, it is recommended to adhere to bed rest. You can get up and eat only after a doctor's examination.

In the future, patients are recommended to follow a diet: do not eat salty, spicy, fried and smoked foods, give up alcohol and smoking, limit the consumption of chocolate and coffee. Weight lifting, running, sudden movements and heavy physical exertion are also contraindicated. After full recovery, most restrictions are removed and patients return to their usual lifestyle.

Potential complications of a kidney cyst

Despite the fact that cysts are benign neoplasms, their potential danger should not be underestimated.

If the cyst has indications for removal, refusing surgery can lead to the development of the following complications:

  • cyst rupture;

  • kidney wall rupture;

  • severe pain syndrome due to compression of nerve endings;

  • impaired blood supply to the kidney and adjacent organs;

  • impaired kidney function;

  • renal failure.

Rupture of the cyst or kidney wall is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate operations.

Answers to popular questions about laparoscopic kidney cyst excision

Can a kidney cyst resolve?

Many patients think that a kidney cyst can resolve, but in practice such cases do not occur. If a cyst is detected, the doctor's recommendations should be followed. For small and uncomplicated cysts, dispensary observation is prescribed - examination by a urologist and ultrasound 1-2 times a year, in other cases, it is recommended to remove the neoplasm.

Can a kidney cyst turn into cancer?

A cyst is a benign neoplasm, but if risk factors are present, there is a possibility of malignancy - transformation into a malignant tumor. If the risk is high, the patient is recommended to remove the cyst.
