Otolaryngology diagnostic methods at the Oxford Medical clinic

The primary otolaryngology diagnostics is carried out during the consultation. He asks about the symptoms of the disease, the time of their appearance, previous and chronic diseases. The specialist also examines the nose, throat and ears. In some cases, this is enough to make a diagnosis. If the pathology is more complex, additional examinations may be required for its diagnosis.

Rhinoscopy

Examination of the nasal cavity using a special instrument - a rhinoscope. The procedure allows the otolaryngologist to assess the condition of the nasal mucosa, septum, and turbinates and detect signs of inflammation, curvature, polyps, neoplasms, or other pathologies.

Pharyngoscopy

This is a visual examination of the pharynx that an otolaryngologist performs during an examination. The procedure allows you to assess the condition of the oropharyngeal mucosa, palatine tonsils, posterior pharyngeal wall, and palate.

Otoscopy

Method of visual examination of the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane using a special instrument called an otoscope. It helps detect inflammation, earwax buildup, foreign bodies, injuries, or perforations of the eardrum.

Endoscopy

Modern diagnostic method used to examine the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, larynx, ears, and throat with the help of a thin flexible or rigid endoscope equipped with a light and camera. It allows for detailed visualization of internal structures to detect inflammation, tumors, polyps, foreign bodies, or anatomical abnormalities. The procedure is minimally invasive, quick.

Ultrasound examination

Non-invasive diagnostic method used to assess the condition of soft tissues of the neck, salivary glands, lymph nodes, nasal sinuses, and other structures near the ENT organs. Ultrasound helps detect inflammation, cysts, tumors, and abscesses. The procedure is safe, painless, and does not require special preparation.

Computed tomography

Highly accurate X-ray-based imaging method that provides cross-sectional views of the paranasal sinuses, middle ear, pharynx, larynx, and adjacent structures. CT is particularly useful for diagnosing sinusitis, tumors, infections, or anatomical abnormalities. It can be performed with or without contrast.

Bronchoscopy

Endoscopic procedure used to examine the inside of the trachea and bronchi with a special instrument called a bronchoscope. It helps detect inflammation, tumors, foreign bodies, bleeding, or airway narrowing. Bronchoscopy may be diagnostic or therapeutic and is performed under local or general anesthesia.

Audiometry

Hearing test used to measure a person's ability to perceive sounds of different frequencies and volumes. It is performed using a special device called an audiometer. The results are recorded on an audiogram and help diagnose the degree and type of hearing loss, such as sensorineural or conductive hearing loss.

How to Prepare
for a otolaryngologist visit

What should you take to an appointment with an otolaryngologist?

It is advisable to bring the results of preliminary examinations, if any (tests, X-rays, endoscopy, CT scans) to the appointment. Also take with you a referral from your family doctor or an extract from your medical history, if relevant. This will help the doctor quickly get his bearings in the clinical picture.

What should you not do before a visit to an otolaryngologist?

Before taking the drug, it is advisable to refrain from using vasoconstrictor drops, sprays, antiseptic solutions or other medications for the nose, throat or ears. Their use may affect the accuracy of the diagnosis. If you are already undergoing treatment, be sure to inform your doctor.

Do I need to come on an empty stomach?

An otolaryngologist appointment usually does not require fasting. However, if blood sampling or endoscopic examination (for example, nasal or laryngeal endoscopy) is planned, the doctor may recommend that you refrain from eating 2–4 hours before the procedure. We recommend that you clarify this when making your appointment.a

Treatment methods for otolaryngologic conditions

To treat diseases of the nose, throat, and ears, the following methods are used:

  • conservative (medication-based) therapy;

  • physiotherapy procedures;

  • minimally invasive and classical surgical interventions.

The otolaryngology department at Oxford Medical is fully equipped to provide comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for conditions of any complexity.

Most acute inflammatory and infectious conditions respond well to medication. After making a diagnosis, the doctor creates a treatment plan and allows the patient to return home, scheduling a follow-up visit to monitor effectiveness.

In some cases, conservative therapy is combined with physiotherapy procedures. At Oxford Medical, patients can receive outpatient cryotherapy for the tonsils, as well as ultrasound, ultraviolet, laser, and phototherapy. Our otolaryngologists also perform flushing of the tonsillar crypts, nasal sinuses, and ear canals (to remove earwax plugs), along with other physiotherapy treatments.

Surgical operations in the otolaryngology department are performed not only for medical reasons but also for aesthetic purposes — such as correcting a deviated nasal septum (rhinoplasty) or changing the shape of the ear (otoplasty).

For surgical interventions, otolaryngologists at our facility in Berezniaky (where the surgical ward is located) primarily use endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques. Many conditions are effectively treated using radio wave and laser surgery. These methods access the target tissues through the oropharynx or nasopharynx, avoiding incisions on the face or neck. Such surgeries are low-trauma, have a short recovery time, and often allow the patient to go home the same day.

Endoscopic technology is also highly effective for removing foreign bodies from the ear, nose, or throat. It allows precise localization and safe extraction. However, in some cases — for example, if an insect or small toy part enters the nose or ear — the object can be removed using forceps or irrigation. In all cases, the procedure is quick and nearly painless.

FAQ

Do I need a referral from a family doctor for a consultation?

No, a referral is not required. You can schedule an appointment with an otolaryngologist at Oxford Medical on your own — without first visiting a family doctor. Simply choose a convenient time and book your visit online or by phone.

Is diagnostic testing by an otolaryngologist painful?

Most procedures used in modern otolaryngology — such as examination, rhinoscopy, otoscopy, and endoscopy — are non-invasive and painless. If a patient has heightened sensitivity, local anesthesia in the form of a spray may be used.

When should I see an otolaryngologist without delay?

An urgent consultation is needed if you experience severe pain in the ear or throat, notice purulent discharge from the ear or nose, sudden hearing loss, or a blocked ear following water exposure or trauma.
