Treatment of duodenitis is selected depending on the form of the disease, the cause of the inflammation, and the depth of damage to the mucous membrane.
Drug therapy may include:
- proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers — to reduce acidity and lessen the aggressive effect of gastric juice;
- gastroprotective agents — to protect and restore the mucous membrane;
- antibacterial therapy — in confirmed Helicobacter pylori infection;
- antispasmodics — in case of pronounced pain syndrome;
- prokinetics — in the presence of impaired intestinal motility.
In an acute process, treatment usually lasts several weeks and is aimed at relieving inflammation and symptoms. In the erosive form, treatment is longer, since it is necessary not only to reduce inflammation, but also to ensure healing of defects of the mucous membrane.
In chronic duodenitis, therapy has a staged nature. First, exacerbation treatment is carried out, after which maintenance therapy is prescribed to stabilize the condition of the mucous membrane.
An обязательный component of therapy is correction of lifestyle and nutrition in duodenitis: fractional meals, refusal of alcohol, smoking, excessively spicy and fatty dishes. A comprehensive approach makes it possible to achieve stable remission, reduce the frequency of exacerbations, and prevent the development of complications.
