Furunculosis treatment

A furuncle is an acute purulent inflammation of the hair follicle and adjacent tissues, which most often develops due to a bacterial infection. In everyday language, such a formation is often called a boil. At first, a painful lump may appear on the skin, which gradually increases, becomes red, and over time may fill with pus.

Furunculosis is a condition in which furuncles appear repeatedly or occur at once on several areas of the skin. Such purulent formations should not be perceived only as a cosmetic problem. If they recur, do not heal for a long time, or are accompanied by pain, elevated temperature, or worsening well-being, a doctor’s consultation is needed.

At the Oxford Medical clinic, patients can undergo an examination, diagnostics, and receive individually selected treatment taking into account the localization of the furuncle, the stage of the inflammatory process, and concomitant diseases.

Furunculosis: causes of appearance

The main cause of a furuncle is the penetration of bacteria into the hair follicle. Most often, it concerns a staphylococcal infection. Normally, the skin has protective mechanisms that restrain the development of bacteria, but under certain conditions this barrier is disrupted.

The main causes of furunculosis:

  • microtraumas of the skin — cuts, scratches, irritation after shaving or friction from clothing;
  • decreased immune defense — after infections, overfatigue, stress, or chronic diseases;
  • increased sweating and insufficient skin hygiene — conditions under which bacteria multiply more actively;
  • diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders — they can worsen tissue healing;
  • chronic foci of infection — in particular in the nasopharynx or on the skin;
  • incorrect squeezing of pimples — independent squeezing of elements of acne, ingrown hair, or small pustules traumatizes the skin and may contribute to deeper inflammation;
  • wearing tight clothing — constant friction can irritate the skin and contribute to infection.

Furunculosis in adults often has not one cause, but occurs as a result of a combination of several factors. That is why with repeated rashes it is important not only to eliminate the specific purulent formation, but also to find out why the inflammation occurs again.

Classification of furunculosis

Furuncles may differ by the number of purulent elements, the course of the process, and localization. Such division helps the doctor assess the extent of inflammation, the risk of complications, and determine the optimal treatment tactics.

By the number of purulent elements, the following are distinguished:

  • single — one inflammatory focus on a certain area of the skin;
  • multiple — several foci that may occur simultaneously or gradually;
  • recurrent furunculosis — repeated appearance after a period of healing.

By the course, the process may be:

  • acute — occurs suddenly, passes through the stages of inflammation, and with proper treatment gradually heals;
  • chronic — purulent elements recur, sometimes on different areas of the body, so the patient needs broader diagnostics to search for the cause of recurrences.

By localization, furuncles may appear:

  • on the face, neck, or hairy part of the head;
  • on the back, chest, buttocks, or thighs;
  • in the underarm areas;
  • in the area of the nose or ear.

A boil on the body more often forms in places of friction, increased sweating, or irritation of the skin by clothing. Furuncles on the face, in the nose, and in the area of the ear require separate attention. Due to the features of blood supply and the proximity of important anatomical structures, such formations must not be treated independently. If a furuncle has appeared in the nose or ear, not only an examination by a dermatologist may be needed, but also an ENT consultation.

Furunculosis:
symptoms of the disease

Manifestations depend on the stage of inflammation, the size of the furuncle, and its localization.

The most characteristic symptoms:

a painful lump that gradually increases;

redness, swelling, and a local feeling of warmth;

increased pain when touched or rubbed by clothing;

sometimes — weakness or elevated temperature.

List of diseases

A purulent furuncle may be accompanied by significant pain, especially if it is located in the area of the face, armpit, buttocks, or thigh. At the beginning of inflammation, a furuncle without a head often forms: there is a painful lump, redness, and swelling, but the purulent center is not yet visible. Such a condition may also be called a furuncle without a core, when the inflammatory process is already developing in the tissues, but the purulent contents have no outlet outward. It is not allowed to puncture, squeeze, or heat such a formation independently — this may intensify inflammation and contribute to the spread of infection.

Diagnosis of the disease

Diagnosis of furunculosis begins with a doctor's examination. In most cases, a furuncle has a characteristic appearance, so a preliminary diagnosis can be established already during the consultation. The doctor assesses the size of the formation, the depth of inflammation, the presence of purulent contents, the condition of the surrounding skin, and the patient's general well-being.

It is also important to determine whether it concerns a single furuncle or repeated inflammatory elements. If the formations appear often, do not heal for a long time, or occur on different areas of the body, the doctor may look for factors that support the inflammatory process: decreased immune defense, metabolic disorders, or chronic infections.

If necessary, additional examinations may be prescribed:

  • complete blood count — to assess signs of inflammation;
  • bacteriological examination of purulent contents — to determine the pathogen and sensitivity to antibiotics;
  • blood glucose test — if inflammations of the follicles recur or heal poorly;
  • additional tests and consultations with related specialists — in frequent recurrences, suspicion of chronic infections, metabolic disorders, or decreased immune defense.

Diagnostics is important not only to confirm the diagnosis, but also to understand the reasons why the inflammation recurs. This is especially relevant if it concerns furunculosis of the skin with frequent exacerbations.

Methods of treating furunculosis

Treatment tactics depend on the stage of inflammation, the size of the furuncle, its localization, and the presence of complications. Small inflammatory elements at an early stage are treated conservatively; in complex cases, surgical intervention may be prescribed.

Main methods of treatment:

  • local therapy — antiseptic treatment and anti-inflammatory agents, which the doctor selects depending on the stage of inflammation;
  • antibacterial therapy — used according to indications in widespread inflammation, elevated temperature, recurrences, or a high risk of complications;
  • removal of the furuncle — performed if a purulent focus has formed, which needs to be safely opened, cleaned, and drained;
  • observation after intervention — control of healing and prevention of repeated infection.

If a subcutaneous furuncle is detected during the examination, treatment may begin with conservative therapy: local treatment, anti-inflammatory agents, pain control, and observation of dynamics. The doctor assesses whether a purulent focus is forming and whether there are indications for surgical opening. Such an approach allows premature intervention to be avoided and the risk of complications to be reduced.

If the purulent focus has already formed, removal of the furuncle by surgical means may be needed. This means opening the purulent focus, cleaning, and creating conditions for normal healing. Independent squeezing is dangerous: it may spread the infection deeper into the tissues or to neighboring areas.

Treatment of furunculosis in adults should be comprehensive, especially if the problem recurs. In such cases, it is important not only to eliminate the specific furuncle, but also to check possible background factors: the state of the immune system, glucose level, chronic infections, and features of skin care.

Possible complications

Complications may occur if the infection spreads beyond the hair follicle. The risk is higher with independent squeezing, incorrect treatment, weakened immunity, diabetes mellitus, or the location of the furuncle on the face, in the nose, or near the eyes.

Possible complications:

  • abscess — formation of a limited cavity with pus in the tissues;
  • phlegmon — widespread purulent inflammation without clear boundaries;
  • lymphangitis or lymphadenitis — inflammation of lymphatic vessels or nodes;
  • scarring — formation of a noticeable mark after deep inflammation;
  • recurrences — repeated appearance after healing.

If an abscess has formed, removal of the abscess may be needed — surgical opening, cleaning, and drainage of the purulent focus. Such an intervention is performed by a doctor in sterile conditions in order to reduce the risk of the spread of infection and ensure normal healing.

It is especially dangerous to squeeze furuncles on the face, in the nose, near the lips or eyes independently. In these areas, the infection may spread faster, so in case of pain, swelling, elevated temperature, or enlargement of the formation, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Prevention of the appearance of furuncles

Prevention is aimed at reducing the risk of repeated infection of the skin and maintaining its protective function. It is especially important for people who have already had furuncles before or have a tendency to recurrences.

Main recommendations:

  • observe daily skin hygiene without excessive use of aggressive products;
  • do not squeeze pimples, ingrown hairs, or purulent elements;
  • treat small cuts, scratches, and irritations with an antiseptic;
  • avoid friction of the skin by tight clothing or rough fabrics;
  • use individual towels and hygiene products;
  • treat chronic infections in a timely manner;
  • control blood glucose levels in the presence of risk factors;
  • consult a doctor in case of repeated appearance of furuncles.

If furuncles recur, prevention should include not only proper skin care, but also a search for the cause of recurrences. Without this, the inflammatory process may return again, even after successful treatment of a separate furuncle.

Treatment and removal of a furuncle: price in Kyiv at the Oxford Medical clinic

The cost of treatment depends on the stage of the inflammatory process, the localization of the furuncle, and the chosen treatment tactics. You can preliminarily review the prices for doctors’ consultations here. During the appointment, the doctor will perform an examination, prepare a treatment program, and orient you regarding the cost of medical services, in particular explain the cost of furuncle removal.

Sometimes patients are also interested in what the price is for laser removal of a furuncle, however, with purulent formations such a method is not used. In the case of a formed furuncle, treatment involves surgical opening and drainage of the focus, which allows the inflammation to be safely eliminated. Laser technologies may be used after healing — for example, for correction of scars after furuncles, as well as removal of some non-infectious skin formations.

At the Oxford Medical clinic, patients can undergo consultation, diagnostics, and treatment in one medical center. If necessary, surgical treatment of purulent formations is performed in compliance with modern safety standards.

At the Oxford Medical clinic, all necessary medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of furunculosis are available, and there is also the possibility to choose a convenient location for a visit. In particular, a dermatologist is available at Palats Ukraina, Pechersk, Podil, Obolon, Dorohozhychi, as well as in other districts of Kyiv and in Irpin. Frequently asked questions

Which doctor treats furuncles?

A dermatologist or surgeon treats furuncles. If the formation is small and has no signs of complication, a dermatologist's consultation is sufficient. With deep inflammation, severe pain, swelling, or the presence of pus, a surgeon's help may be needed. The doctor assesses the stage of the process and selects treatment — from local therapy to surgical intervention.

What is the difference between a furuncle and a carbuncle?

A furuncle is a purulent inflammation of one hair follicle with limited tissue involvement. A carbuncle is a deeper and more widespread inflammation that covers several follicles simultaneously and has larger dimensions. A carbuncle is accompanied by stronger pain, swelling, and more often causes general symptoms, therefore it usually requires more intensive treatment.

Are boils transmitted?

The boil itself is not transmitted as a disease, but the bacteria that cause it may get onto another person's skin through contact, towels, or hygiene items. The risk increases in the presence of skin damage or reduced immunity. Therefore, it is important to observe hygiene, use individual items, and not touch inflamed areas with your hands.

Can a boil be squeezed?

A boil must not be squeezed. Mechanical pressure may push the infection deeper into the tissues, intensify inflammation, and contribute to the spread of bacteria. This increases the risk of complications, especially when located on the face or in the area of the nose. If the furuncle hurts, increases, or does not go away, it is necessary to consult a doctor for safe treatment.

Can a boil be wetted?

A boil can be wetted during hygiene procedures, but without aggressive impact. The affected area should not be rubbed with a washcloth, steamed, or traumatized. After contact with water, the skin should be carefully blotted with a clean towel. If the boil has opened or there is purulent discharge, it is better to agree on the care rules with a doctor.

Can a furuncle be heated?

It is not recommended to heat a furuncle independently. Hot compresses or heating may increase swelling and contribute to the spread of infection in the tissues. In some cases, the doctor may recommend warm moist compresses, but this depends on the stage of inflammation. Without consultation, it is better to avoid any heat exposure to the affected area.

What to do if a furuncle does not break through?

If a furuncle does not open for a long time, increases, or becomes more painful, you need to consult a doctor. You must not puncture or squeeze it independently. The doctor will assess the stage of inflammation and determine whether medication treatment or surgical opening is needed. Timely help helps avoid complications and speed up healing.

What to do when a boil has burst?

If a boil has opened, it is not necessary to squeeze out the remaining pus or traumatize the wound. The affected area should be carefully cleaned, covered with a sterile dressing, and hygiene should be maintained. If pain, swelling, or discharge persist, you need to consult a doctor. He will assess the condition of the wound and give recommendations for proper healing.
